Last summer while my M8 was off floating around in Europe getting repaired, I got back into film, and good ol' Freestyle pulled through with some cheap bulk rolls.

Like many here, I lamented the demise of Acros, hoarded a few 120 rolls, and tried out ADOX Silvermax. I grew completely enamored over this film and bought a pair of 100' rolls at a great price, along with old Delta and TMY standbys.

I went to order another couple batches today and saw that Freestyle lists all ADOX stock other than CMS20 as discontinued. B&H has some in stock at almost twice the price and as a 'special order'.

I know there were rumors for years that Silvermax was just old stock Scala (and different from current production Scala) and would be gone for good when sold out. Has that finally proved its veracity? And regardless, is there a reason for a complete lack of bulk rolls from ADOX? Anyone hear/read anything moderately official on this? It'd be a shame to lose another stock in bulk form. It was only recently a professor taught me the value in rolling one's own and I've come to enjoy the process.

All that said, i've been diligently following the blog documenting their new production facility, and am excited to see what comes from it. In the meantime, I suppose I'll be heading back to D100.

Silvermax and how it came about is pretty well described.

If you want to know anything about Adox products, just contact them. They are by far more open and direct than any other manufacturer about their product line, plans and direction.

I like Silvermax too, particularly in the Adox Silvermax developer.

The Adox CHSII is similar, and seems in production.

+1.
Silvermax was introduced at Photokina 2012. And the Adox CEO was absolutely honest about its future right from the beginning: He said that it is a unique production run which cannot be done again. So when the film is sold out, it will be gone.
Those who like Silvermax should stock up now.
Silvermax is indeed quite similar to Agfa Scala, but not identical: Silvermax has finer grain, but also 1/3 stop less sensitivity.

And Adox CHS 100 II is indeed a very good replacement: Same spectral sensivity, same tonality, similar sharpness and resolution. Only grain is a bit more visible on CHS 100 II. CHS 100 II is currently available in sheets. 35mm and 120 will follow next, they are working on it.

Cheers, Jan

Thanks for the responses. I’ll shoot Mirko and Freestyle an email. I guess that was he obvious answer! I was just a little surprised to see 100 footers out of stock basically everywhere.

Does anyone have an official source on it being a limited run? I couldn’t find any direct quotes from the Photokina announcement, but rather a post on a different forum by Mirko. He stated that the emulsion was new but the base was leftover stock with enough to last about 5 years worth of production. He didn’t say in that post that it would be discontinued, but perhaps increase in price once it ran out.

I’ll have to give CHS a try. I’m just happy someone out there is making new films to try out!
