New York advance warning (or, just saying "hi" to the NYC crowd)

Generally we schedule to accomodate visitors. We really create a "safe" place where no one is ever excluded and everyone is welcomed, even Nikon SLR sluts like me. Just be aware that people have crazy amounts of gear, and GAS can be a real problem. At the last Meet-Up we probably had about $100K of cameras and glass laying around the table. Perhaps at the Second Annual Leica M-Body Beauty Pagent we could have about a quarter million dollars worth of gear. In New York we kinda get excessive in a fun way.

Consider your date booked for the March Meet-Up. In the beginning of March we will firm up the date and give the location.

I figure we can secure the balcony pretty easily because its one way in and one way out. Also in military terms we have will have the high ground with the stairs being a choke point. It takes three times the amount of force to take a hill, and it is unlikely that 50-60 Camandos or Ninja will storm an expected large crowd of rangfinder nerds.

Perhaps I should wear my Nikon F3 with motordrive and handstrap so people feel safe. :angel: LOL.

John,

Puck Fair was a great choice to have our Meet-Up. I wanna take a shot of that basement bar that is caged off like a prison cell. Also the bare light bulb over the round table reminded me of Van Gogh's painting "The Potatoe Eaters" except we were feasting on about $100K worth of gear. This place displays a lot of character that relects our Meet-Up IMHO. THanks for suggesting this location.

The reason I think upstairs might be a better location is that this Meet-Up has the potential to be a big mob. Let's start at the round table and see how it goes, but I expect a rather big turnout for this annual special event.

At last month's I kinda got there over a half hour early to stake out the place. I'm glad I did because for the twenty that came it was kinda cozy. (Some people came and had to leave early and some people just came late for those of you who were not there.)

I intend to be there before 12:30 again so we don't get scooped. Also was good to flirt with the waitress when I had her complete attention. LOL. It was also good to communicate to her and give her the heads up that an unruley mob was assembling and converging.

"How many people?" she asked.

"I don't know," I said and then there was this sense of pure terror when I explained that this meeting was set up over the internet. The expression on her face was interesting, and at that moment she kinda stated in her expression, "This guys a wack job."

It sounds like the NYC RFF group has superceded the Toronto RFF group as the most active in the world. We're more laid back, probably like the California gang.

We're pretty laid back. In fact I think of myself as a big slacker. Mostly we enjoy getting together and laughing at ourselves. I believe we are pretty big on gear though.

I predict the NY RFF group will have the first fight break out... some of us like to drink a few too many at the meetings... hahaha! Either that, or someone's camera will get beer spilled on it ...

Hmmm, this might be a good time for me to finally pick up that Rapidwinder I've been dreaming about ... the advance levers on those make for a nice weapon. That, or a saran wrap cover for the inevitable beer.

Cal has his M6 set-up for this purpose... take an eye out with that thing!

I'm a little paranoid, I keep my cameras in the bag unless someone wants to see something. Plus, I don't have any rarities or big money items, so people usually don't want to see my stuff.

My M6 also has a TA Rapidgrip and a custom handstrap. Its kind of a Leica that's part dagger, part brass knuckles, and part blackjack.

I kinda got the idea from carrying rigged Nikon F3's equipt with motordrives and handstraps all over the city. Its kinda clear that I have a deadly weapon strapped to my hand in plain sight, and adds an element to the idea of street shooting.

While Carl does strongly resemble Jack Nickelson, it doesn't hurt to look a little odd or crazy in New York.

That sounds like the rig i needed when I was assaulted and maced (thankfully it misfired) in SF a few years back!

But I might have to reconsider my joining you guys if the Annual Beauty Pageant is going to be paired with an Annual RFF Rumble in the Bronx or some such 😉

I can vouch for the NYC crazies.
My GF thought I was a bit nuts when I oohed-and-aahed about the latest Leica goody.
But, after I attended the last NYC meet and told her all about it, she now thinks I'm quite normal.
It all depends on your frame of reference.
