Hi all,
For my first foray into M photography, I have bought a used M8.2 and a used 24/2.8 with 6-bit coding. I had the Zeiss 25/2.8 for a week but it wasn't altered to bring up the correct framelines and obviously the coding would not work. So I sent it back for a 24 Elmarit. The handling of the lens is very different. The focus ring is much smoother without being loose bug much less damped than the Zeiss. I'm more concerned about the aperture ring though. I've found that again it's much smoother than the Zeiss with positive clicks but I find that I can turn the ring just past the markings for 2.8 and 16 but then the ring sits "back" in its indent. Does this represent play in the aperture ring? The Zeiss was much more damped with the same positive clicks but would not turn beyond the aperture markings.
Hopefully I'm being too paranoid but I want to make sure my purchase is "normal"!
Thanks, steve

If I am not mistaken, all Leica lenses have aperture rings like what you described. It's very normal without any problems!

My Leica & Zeiss follow the same pattern as you described. I never really gave it much thought.

I answered the same question WRT a 35 Summicron ASPH earlier in the week. It's normal, my 24/2.8 has exactly the same "feature", as do a number of Leica lenses.

Ohhh, this post has been helpful for me too! My 35 'cron pre-asph was purchased 2nd hand (a bit of a beater), and the aperture ring is pretty "smooth" as well as being able to "over turn" a bit. My CV 15 on the other hand has much harder "clicks" in comparison.
I've always wondered if this was a problem with my lens, but I guess now I have my answer.
