A friend's Contax (sn 0107xx) failed him recently. When the camera is opened, the lens zooms in and out continuously, and the front of the camera gets hot. Before sending it off for repairs, I thought I might seek some guidance here.
Any help appreciated.

Trust in TOCAD, they are pretty quick and do very good work. My only complaint is not hearing all that they did to the camera when it returns.
(and I still haven't run into you at the St. J. market Harry!- not for want of looking...)

A camera that gets really hot in a specific point could be an indication of an electrical short.
And electrical shorts can damage or destroy electronic circuits. I would imagine that camera has those.
Maybe it's something that is fixed easily, or it could be a costly repair. The camera probably will have to be opened to figure out which it is.

Thanks, Bob: I'll follow up on TOCAD.
Yeah, I've been watching for you too. Last week I attended the the fall foliage celebration, in the rain, in St. J. I was challenged at the firehouse to try their "hot" chili. With tearing eyes and runny nose I remarked that my symptoms suggested the dish was acceptable. Got some laughs.
I'll be back in the NEK for a couple of weeks on ~9 Oct.

FYI on T models:
I followed up on Bob's suggestion of TOCAD and was redirected to Metro Camera Repairs in NY. They informed me of a name change to Nippon Photo Clinic, 950 B'way, Suite 705, NY NY 10010. Free repair estimate.

I was at the E. Burke Foliage festival Saturday, spent Sunday in my root cellar.

In your root cellar? Isn't it kinda dark for taking snaps?

The camera is back and in good working order. Either the camera had been sent to Japan or a part had to be ordered. Cost ~$180.
Thanks all for the advice.

Harry, thanks for following up on this. So many inquiry threads just fade out without any resolution.
