Advice Needed: Portable 4x5?

Tri-X @ EI1600 ;) Decent shutter speed and stop it way down for DOF. It'll make you forget Tmax even exists LOL.

Diafine is your friend.

FYI: if you do go the long exposure route, TMAX 100 has much more favorable characteristics than Tri-X for long exposures. Due to the differences in reciprocity behavior, TMAX 100 is a lot "faster" than Tri-X for exposures over a couple of seconds.

Do any of them ship overseas? The cheapest source I located hereabouts wanted ten Euro apiece, minimum order a box of ten, plus VAT and shipping, and will only deal with you if you are a registered corporation.

This is one of the places I've bought from but they say the only ship US, which is not too good for you: http://battstore.stores.yahoo.net/evned415225v.html

The other supplier I've used is www.radioshack.com, but they are "out of stock".

From either source I've bought in quantities of two (2) and never been required to buy more. I've never paid less than USD15, but feel the price is well worth being able to use the electric release on SuperGraphic. They seem to have a relatively long lifespan.

Have you tried checking at your local electroncis shops (if you have any; ours have mostly closed up a decade ago)... ther once was some electronic test equipment that used this battery and I once could get them off-the-shelf at those shops. But that was a decade or two ago so I suppose things may ahve changed.

Sevo, I had a little bit of time to spare and did a google search on "eveready 412". There are a lot of suppliers... in the US, who only ship to US locations.

I double-checked RadioShack and found that I was wrong -- the batter is actually in stock. I must have looked at the 15v batt in teh same package. I thought Tandy/Radioshack had an international presence and would service clients throughout the world but found that they only ship US. What a shock.

I know nothing about these folks, but they appear to be the only battery supplier in the US who will ship internationally. Check their shipping policy.

I watched a friend of mine shoot a group of 150 seated people indoors on a 4X5, lit with about 20 paper lanterns overhead. A 4 second exposure. The printed photo he sent me later was 90% sharp. How I asked? "You coach the group. Explain the long exposure thing. Refer to historical photos of even longer exposures. Get everyone enrolled in the process. During the first second, people will move some, but then they will settle down and hold still. If the great majority of the long exposure is still, the movement during the first part of the exposure will be negligible. Shoot 3 or 4 sheets".

I had looked earlier also, and couldn't find any either. I was at Batteries in a Flash, but ran out of time and didn't get that they sold internationally but they in fact do. Check http://www.batteriesinaflash.com/shippinginfo for info.

I bought them from Midwest Photo Exchange. I can't imagine they would not ship international. I also bought a battery door for the Super Graphic from them. It's been a few years however. I would also check with Columbus Camera Group in Columbus Ohio.

Definitely keep trying. Figure out what shutter speed you want to stop motion and work from there.

I get good hand-held indoor shots of people with a crown graphic using f/5.6 to f/8 and pushing HP5+ to 800 or 1600, developing in D76 or DD-X. Shutter speed of 1/125 seems to work well most of the time, although 1/60 might also work.

Also consider a monopod, which I guess would give you an extra shutter speed or two to play with.

For a posed group shot, though, I'd likely use a tripod and compose on the GG, as some have suggested.

You could build one. Not too difficult, (hey, I did it with no prior knowledge) at least if you dispense with movements. Start with the lens you´d like a Graflok back and go on from there. Hand held speeds of 1/30s should be quite easy as there is practically nothing that can induce shake on a camera of this type, 1/15 and 1/8 too with practice.
