Advice on Battery performance of RD1

Hello,

I just got a 2nd hand RD1. I found that it consumed much electricity and I think I need to bring 3 to 4 batteries when I need whole day shooting.

The batteries are generic brand called Powersmart by Japan with 1500mAH brand new. I yesterday spend around 3 hours to take around 130- 140 shots set with RAW and JPEG (HQ). After that, the battery will be ran out and I need to switch off and on and I think it can take another 20-30 shot which switching on and off situation.

So that under this situation aforesaid, is that a normal performance?? Hope to hear so advices. thank you.

140 shots over about 3 hours is what I get, too. Shutting the camera off does revive it for a while. 20 additional shots would be good in that degraded state. I usually carry 2-3 spare batteries for a shoot that long. So what, you'd need a brick of film to equal that many shots.

I used to be able to get closer to 200 shots during intermittent use (over a period of days to weeks) on a fully charged Epson brand battery, but nowadays 150 on near continuous use within a period of 3-5 hours sounds about right. Prolonged use of the metering seems to drain the battery faster. Either the R-D1 seems to use more energy than the M8, or the M8 battery is much higher capacity because M8 users supposedly get closer to 500 shots on a single charge. This is somewhat suprising because I thought that since the R-D1 has a shutter that must be manually cocked that it would use less energy than the motorized shutter mechanism of the M8.

In any case, I try to carry all four of my batteries with me, but I rarely use more than two in a day for my style of shooting.

I agree also.

I get from 100 - 130 over half a day on both the original Epson and replacement NP80's from 7 Day Shop. This with minimal LCD use. The replacements now hold up slightly better than the original Epson, which is 4 years old. I just carry two or three spares on an outing.

Any difference between Raw+jpg and just jpg?

I get between 100 and 150 shooting Raw on a full charge. There were reports that the shots per charge dropped with the R-D1S firmware. I can't be certain, but IIRC I used to get more per charge with the original firmware.

tuolumne, i don't understand your comment. we're talking digi comparisons here, no? imho, the R-D1 is an underperformer on batt charges as far as digi cams go. one drawback, that's all - still a great unit in many other respects.

Ever tried to take a knife and open a battery guys? You'll see that there is one battery only in Fuji NP-80 and compatible like Epson's but two of them in Nikon's, Canon's and the like. It is not for nothing that Epson's are so tiny.

I was just saying that 3-4 batteries were alot smaller to carry around than the equivalent shooting amount of film - about a 10 pack.

I just can say the batteries are fortunately small to carry. I am too green for RD1 and the battery performance is really "out" of my expectation, haha. Anyway, just like Mike said above, all other respects are very good. Except the battery, and 6.1 MP, I think it is even better than M8.

I've got about a 150 photo's out of the first fully charged battery I've used since received my R-D1. This was with considerable use of the LCD, switching between RAW and Hi-res JPEG and trying out all the features, in and out of intense cold weather.

This was with an Epson Brand battery.

I'm also getting about 150 shots (RAW + JPEG) per (Epson) battery, with liberal use of the LCD screen. I rarely take more that 1 spare battery on the road even though I have quite a few spares.
