Advise on Prime-Film 3650u Scanner please

I am getting a $200.00 gift to buy a Film scanner. for under $300.00 there are two.

😎 Prime-Film 3650u With Digital Ice 3 $270 @ BH

😎 Prime-Film 3600u Without Digital Ice $210 @ BH

...(edit) 😎 Just fund a PLUSTEK OPTICFILM 7200 FILM SCANNER for under $200.00 at Newegg.com. 2700dpi to 7200dpi Optical Res. 35mm only with lots of imaging software....(edit)

Any opinions ??


I shoot C-41 BW (TMX 100/400) and Color (Kodak 400UC, or Portra 160, and Fuji 800 Xtra). Not much Silver based BW

Both the Prime-Film offer the same DPI 3600, and files are 5328 x 3444 Pixels. (18mp).

Is the Digital Ice software a good plus.

Any insight on using these ?? what films have you used with these, and results acquired.

When do I use Digital Ice ?? I have read in other threads that with some films, it is better to disable the software before scanning.

Never used any but I remember reading that the Prime-Film scanners are not very good. And the Plustek? I'll guarantee you it does not go to 7200 dpi.

I think you'd do MUCH better spending a bit more for a used Minolta or Nikon LS-IV.

Same boat as you. I have a Primefilm 1800 now.

The plustek gets low reviews. this one -Reflecta Crystal Scan 7200- looks better in the same league.


I'm quite lost between those low-end dedicated scanners and a flatbed like an epson 4490 or equivalent HP (multiple negs in one go)

I've actualy seen some quite good reviews for the latest Plusteks - they seemed at least on par with the Minolta DSIV. I saw some that were posted of some 16mm scans (from a Minolta Submini) and the results were more than reasonable.

Digital ICE is for automagically cleaning up scans (dust and scratches), but only works for C-41 and E6 films, not for traditional B+W.

One of the new HP G series scanners (flatbeds) may be an option too.

See if you can do some trial scans somewhere using these scanners.

Just thought I'd point out that Digital Ice is not a software. It's a hardware based function that does an IR-scan of your negs to detect dust and scratches on your negs.

Yes, I too, saw many good reviews. from buyer reviews. I was at the Protek website, And even though they are from $200 - $500, The 7200 seemed pretty good. If I can get a good 3600dpi scan, than I would be happy.

I may have miss printed info on the the 7200. It claims to scan from 2700 dpi, to 7200 dpi. My lap claims to scan at 600 dpi, and I get a file size of 2400x3600 from that. It pretty good for slow film and Pro 400 film which has a tighter grain typicaly.

I thought DPI and Pixels were interchangable....guess not.
Can some explain what the differance is? AND, What is a good DPI for scanning negs. looking a file size that has all the detail of the negs. I guessing equel to abut a 16-20mp DSLR sensor.

I have $300.00 now saved, If I need to, I will spend more to get the right one. Still, $400-500 is all I can go.

Or get a Bessa R with 35/1.7 new 🙂D 😀 ), Naa... I want a scanner first.

PPI: Pixels per inch, and is the resolution that scanners scan at.
DPI: Dots per inch, and what printers print at.

They are often used, erroneously, interchangeably.

So, you scan (for example) at 3200ppi. If you print at 300 dpi, that would be 3200/300 = 10.67" wide. Print that same image at 150 dpi and it would be 3200/150 = 21.33" wide.

BTW, this Plustek 7200i review was what I was thinking of.

If you can stretch to $500, or slightly more, you may even be able to get a Nikon Coolscan V (especially if you don't mind a refurbished or sales demo model)

I will have to go for a better one.. I will only buy one...so it has to be the best I can get for the Quality I want.

Plus after reading these replys, it was effedent, that it would take too long to get the Nikon CS-V. So I bought the Black Bessa R2 that was for sale here on RFF.
