afternoon in Munich in December

While I won't claim it to be as great as some, by any expectation, I will say in Bavaria's defense that there are more good things hiding there than most give credit for. A proper Jagerschnitzel (sp? my spell check is barfing on the Deutsch) is not to be sneezed at. But I will admit that one goes to Bavaria for things other than food 😀 I may misremember the exact wording, but "Dunkel Wiessen mit Heffe" is the magic phrase in my memory...

I work for a German bank here in NYC and last February had a chance to spend a week in Munich (unfortunately with a very full schedule although I did have a Saturday for myself).

What was interesting is that at many of the "planned" events we were fed "traditional Bavarian cuisine" which can get rather "heavy". [Not to say I didn't enjoy the food - I'm part-German in ethnic background and have been known to enjoy a "hearty" meal or two. 😉 ]

Yet on a few of the more casual get togethers with my Munich colleagues they showed us the "other" places. So I got to have some very good Indian, Greek and, as noted way back above, French (mainly seafood). Also scoped out Chinese, Turkish (of course) etc.

So much for food! My one "free" day while in Munich was the first sunny one after a week of snow and indoor meetings. So I spent my time wandering the city taking pics. Unfortunately, due to bad planning on my part, all I had was a little Olympus P&S but I did grab a few nice shots.

The "old" town (actually rebuilt post-WWII) is picture postcard land - although you can also grab some good "people" shots (shoppers at the Victuellen Market, tourists etc.). I also wandered up Briennerstrasser out toward the palance (name eludes me). More "modern urban" in style.

Unfortunately, it was February so the English Garden looked (and felt) like Antarctica. Consequently I did not seek out the "nude" section since I figured it would not be very populated at -2C! 😱

One of these days I'd like to get back - spend 2 or 3 days in Munich and then travel the Bavarian countryside and up into the Alps.

I hope I have my health when I retire because right now I have all kinds of places I'd like to visit and no time to do so! :bang:

Same here. I do wish us good health, hearty diet or not! (remember Winston Churchill or the Queen Mother?)

While I was in Munich I had a very enjoyable meal at a French seafood restaurant in one of the "upscale" residential neighborhoods. My colleague divides her time between our Munich HQ office and our Paris branch so she "knew" where to go.

You can also find good Greek, Italian and, not surprisingly, Turkish places.

While Munich is not a global gastronome's high-spot - it does offer more than just the usual "cabbage and pork" Bavarian cuisine.

Have a great trip - let us know what you actually do with your "free time".

I've worked for 6 month (including winter) in Münich some years ago and I went to the same french restaurant... (funny no?). The weather may be damn cold but the gear was working okay (Oly E-10 these times...)

compared to my french standards, Münich is definetly not a gourmet place, but you can still find decent meals... and very GREAT riesling wines!

ach you frenchies.
Always gabbing on about the superiority of your food....... 😛

I was in Munich a few years ago, and although I was there for three days, it seemed like every single day, there was a world-class soccer match just finishing, wherever I went...the streets were flooded with soccer hooligans, and I saw some world-class vandalizing a few times. I have no idea how there could have been so much soccer in so little time.

Then there was the evening when I was out for a stroll, and a couple of guys from Berlin smashed their car into a little fiat...the accident happened almost exactly one foot from me left side, and the back of the second car swiped my knee, just hard enough to hurt.

When the fiat's driver got out, it turned out that she was an unbelievably hot turkish chick, who studied philosophy, just like me. Alas, since I had a girlfriend at the time (an unbelievably hot polish chick) nothing more than coffee resulted. Still, it was a unique experience to say the least. I even ended up practicing my german a few weeks later in a written testimony to the court on behalf of the turkish chick.

Great use of the lens; I doubt I could get things to frame that acceptably with that wide of a lens Heck, 35 is really wide for me... 🙂

Thanks for posting them!

William
