again: 1.5x viewfinder magnifier

Hi,

I remember from a previous post that some (former) Epson RD-1 users do sometimes miss the 1:1 finder when using the M8.

Who else (except me) would buy a flip-away 1.5x magnifier which could be attached to the M8 viewfinder and would include the rubber protection cup, for let's say US$ 350.-

Way too expensive?
Better without the rubber protection cup?
Other magnification?

What is your opinion?

The Megaperls 1.35x magnifier produces a 0.92x viewfinder magnification on the M8.

Can you shoot with both eyes open, with the 0.92x magnification?


I've once used an approx. 0.95x Reverse Ralileo finder in another (stereo viewing) application and found the 5% difference to be too disturbing for clear stereo vision.

What is your experience?

P.S. is the Megaperls a screw-in solution? I heard that Leica is fiercely defending a patent they hold on their 1.25x screw-in magnifier?

The 50 and 75mm frame lines would be exactly what I'd be using the magnifier for. I like to do portraits with the 50mm on the RD-1. And I do very much enjoy that I'm still able to visually communicate with the people on front of the lens, despite the camera in between. The situation is much more relaxed when keeping both eyes open...

The idea behind the flip-away solution is that you sometimes have to act quickly; mounting the 75mm is one thing. Relplacing the cover glass with a tiny screw-in magnifier in a hurry is somthing else. I would probably have to pack five magnifiers into my camera bag every morning and would have no magnifier left at the end of the day...

Actually, such a design is nothing new, Canon had a flip-away magnifier for their early SLR models, as a focussing aid.

i have the leica 1.25x.

great for 50mm 75mm lines. i didn't think it would really make a difference but it helps alot in getting that extra accuracy in focus

I have....

HK Supplies cheapo 1.25. It was about $70 and well worth it. I'm crazy about Leica....but not enough to pay $300 for the official version.
 
how is good leica 1.25x compared with megaperls and HK cheapo? I get impression by looking at pictures that the circle looks quite small for the two last magnifiers listed above
 
I just got my Leica 1.25x magnifier today and it makes a HUGE difference. I have not noticed any dimming. I have only one lens - the 50mm f2 Summicron - and intend to stay with only one lens. (I use the D2X for zooming 18mm to 600mm). This small, unobtrusive little optical device greatly improved focusing accuracy and the field of view. I got it from Camera West, by the way. Same place I got the camera and lens. Great guys.
