what lens next?
I'm wondering about the difference between using a 40 or a 50 on the rd1.
I have looked at lots of images taken with both and like both but am unsure which to choose.
40=60 and 50=75 on the rd1. i have never used a 60 and i find that intriguing, something different.
I would likely choose the cv40/1.4 or maybe the sonnar zm 50.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

In my brief experience with the RD1, I find myself gravitating toward 35's and wider. I've used my 50 lux with it for the speed, but I think 75 (cropped) is kinda limiting on a RF.

I have no experience of the CV 40 or ZM 50 sorry.
The way i use them with full frame, 60s are short teles where 40s or 45s are long 35s sort of.
With APS-C, 40mm or 45mm lenses behave more like standard lenses in my view.
On the R-D1, i use the Summicron-C 40/2 like a standard lens anyway. Despite its 60mm equiv. FoV it is the lens that reminds me the Summicron 50 on full frame the most.
As for 50mm lenses, i use them like full frame 75s really. The pre-asph Summilux 50 makes me think of the Summilux 75 for instance and the Summilux asph 50 behaves like a fast Summicron 75.
Just a feeling though. YMMV.

So do i so if you feel like me about longer lenses as well you might well consider the 50 as a more natural complement. 28 + 40 is not long enough for me but again it is a matter of personal taste needless to say.

Hehe yes but the 40 remains my favourite when i bring one lens only.

Yes i have both. I was tempted by the CV 40/1.4 as well but i don't like much its bokeh personally. Many photogs take excellent photos with it though.

For most walkaround I use a Tri-Elmar. Starting with 35mm you can open the fov to 28mm or close to 50mm, depends on the situation and composition. At low light I wasn´t really lucky with a cron/35mm and prefer a nokton/50mm. In my eyes a Tri fits perfect with a R-D1.

Another post here has more or less the same query. If you already have a 28, i'd go with the 50, and add a 35 or maybe a 40 later on.

I find the 50mm just a bit too tight.
I used a 28mm on my d200 for a while which was relatively a 40 and that seemed dead on.
Just bought a CV 28mm 3.5, and have been using a 28 on my minolta.
The farther I go the wider I want.

i find the 50 on my rd1 pretty good when i am wanting to isolate a subject. i did not care for the 35 on the rd1 as it was too close to a 50 fov and 50 was never a fave on film.
i too am thinking about a 40 as i hope the 60 fov will fill in better than the 50.

I use my Summicron C 40 most of the time. The image taken just matches the 35 framelines of the finder. I feeel more confortable than with my Rokkor M 28.
