AGFA/Walgreens/Polaroid 200 Film

With AGFA's demise almost a certainty and supplies of existing AGFA films limited, I anxiously leafed through today's Walgreens' flyer that comes every Sunday with the local paper. I was hoping they'd put their rebadged AGFA 200 color film on sale. They didn't.

My next option was a visit to Wally World where AGFA 200 color film is sold rebadged as "Polaroid" brand. There, I found an odd situation. Their 4-packs of 24 exposure film sells for $4.44 or $1.11 a roll. The individual single roll box sells for $.97 each or $.14 LESS per roll. I bought all 12 rolls that they had on their shelf and will check again in a day or two to see if they've restocked the shelf.

I'm still hopeful that a miracle will occur and that AGFA stays in business but it's not looking good.

Last year when I was considering some of the Wally World Polaroid film, yes, they had the single rolls cheaper than the 4-packs. I was surprised as well.

Now that I'm semi comfortable using it, it looks like it's gonna go bibi shortly. 🙁 Oh well ...

No slide film, a few rolls of APS, one type of (new emulsion, go figger) 110 - It says Kodak ULTRA - now that's a new one on me. Kodak doesn't even list 110 on their website anymore. I thought they were just burning through existing stock. Fewer single-use cameras. The entire rack has halved since last week. At this rate, no film at all by Christmas. Serious.

I hope the Polaroid Agfa is the same as that nice Walgreens Studio 35 Agfa. Good luck!

Bill, they had the 12 exposure rolls for 77 cents but I passed on them. The Wal-Mart in Warner Robins, GA, is supposed to be a "Super" store and they had a reasonable amount of space for film but not like in days past. I really didn't pay much attention to the Kodak or Fuji offerings as I had my hands full with 12 individual rolls of the AGFA/Polaroid stuff!

Grayhoundman, your description of the film shelf is even more depressing than Bills!

Ditto in Illinois. I happened through Walgreen’s (sometimes it's on the way to...) and dropped off film for "develop and scan to disc" only. No problem. One week later, same on-the-way, same Walgreen’s... this time... "We don't do that anymore. Prints or nothing." I took the "nothing."

I'll probably hit Wally's for all the Polaroid possible, whether it's $.97per or the four-pack. (I've gotta feeling not too long down the road I won't mind the extra 14 cents per roll.) The local Wal-mart here too has succumbed to the Incredible Shrinking Film Counter. They still have most of the options they've had, but sometimes they run out of this kind or that for days and I start to wonder if they'll be restocked. I guess eventually, no.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder guys! For me, right now, my film of choice is Kodak Pro 400UC, but it's a good time to stock up on something cheaper for "one of these days."

Sorry. But my area is becoming devoid of film very rapidly.
Another thing I asked at the new Walgreen's was prices on developing.
12 shot roll> $4.24
24 shot>$6.99
These were for single prints.

I have my local Walgreens process my C41 only, and cut/sleeve the negs. $2 per roll. I scan them myself. In fact, if you add up the savings on a per roll basis, you get your money back on a film scanner pretty quickly if you shoot with any frequency.

Carefully hand-processed B&W plus doing your own scanning is about as clean as scanned negs ever get - they can be wonderful!

I develop my own B&W. I only take the color to labs.
Working on a new scanner.🙂 Old one joined the modern art in the backyard.

LOL. We won't be seeing it on "Blue Collar TV" will be?

I do the same thing with B&W and color film. You should try SilverFast; their SRD (scratch removal something something) feature in the upgrade version is really nice when you get crud on the negatives. Saves time cloning out the dirt with Photoshop.

I don't know if you remember this thread, but a guy I work with got in an argument with a store manager about this last month and went all the way to Walgreens Corporate. They assured him that this is a service they offer, and the store manager had no authority to deny it.

If you want I'm sure I can find out exactly who he talked to. This happened to him at 2 stores (long story) and he did end up getting some free processing because of the hassle.

I was in a 'new' Walgreens this weekend (open < 1 month, Chicago area), and was quite surprised that they had an old, scuffed-up Noritsu instead of a Frontier. I might expect a Noritsu after they dumped Fuji films, but an old 'beater' lab in a brand new store???

The tech said they couldn't even burn CD's on it, and they had to use the Kodak digi-kiosk. I'm not even going to ask if I can get develop/CD service….

FWIW, they had a tray of single roll store-brand (Agfa) 200 for $1 per roll; 4 packs more expensive. And the local Waly World still stocks 400UC and TMax 400. No chromes. But, if I'm driving that far, I might as well buy my B&W at the Wolf across the street - and get HP5+.

Ya know? The guy that told me "no CD only" was such a schmuck, it would almost be tempting to go over his head. But honestly, even with the prospect of free processing, (a) if he's trying that hard to run off business, I don't want him working on even my test rolls. And (b) there are waaaaay too many other quicky labs around that do want my money and are glad to offer decent service to get it.

I actually took a test roll of 35mm that I had taken out of the can and put in a black plastic container (another long story) into Wal~Mart, told the young lady what I had and asked did she mind messing with it. She took it out of my hand, walked over and loaded it right then, (skipped the envelope,etc.) so she wouldn't forget and pop the top in the light later. When I returned, she let me look at them on the computer screen to see if I wanted them on a CD or just bag 'em. She burned the CD right then.

Naaaa, the schmuck at Walgreens has is own problems breaking into throw-away cameras. But thanks anyway... and sorry it took so long for me to come back and respond.

Just a heads up from this Pacific Northwest outpost.

The current national circular for Walgreens does mention that they are still selling the Studio 35 200-400 ASA film [The 800 is practically gone, unless one looks really hard on the racks or asks the people behind the counter] by AGFA this week. From what I have noticed out here, this may be ongoing for a while bcecause they have not burned through the supply that supposedly they were going to stop selling as of 12/31/05.

In addition, it looks as though this is also available on the east coast at a few Walgreen's. This in spite of the fact that they are going to be an all Fuji shop as far as the store brand and the in store developing machines are concerned. Best thing to do to check on the avialability is to call the store closest to you.

Another item in re: AGFA: there was a mention at their website [http://www.agfaphoto.com] that while the German/Belgian parent has filed the EU version of the chapter 11, the US division will still be in business for the foreseable future and it will not stop selling the product. That is good news even with Walgreen's drawing down their sales of the product.

One last place to look for AGFA of all speeds is EBAY. Yeah, I know that Some of the product may be a few months over the expiration date and the boxes may be a little different than what was/is aviailable. BUT the product is just as good as the Studio 35 version and sometimes depending on the vendor can be as inexpensive.
