Aggressive behavior in RFF

Yesterday I made a comment about a photograph in the Photo Gallery stating that the image looked posed to me. The image was a family photograph like many, but the author claimed that it had the additional merit of a perfect synchronization to capture the peak action moment. I expressed my doubts about that marvel of synchronization and gave my reasons. The answer received still surprises me and so does too the silence of other members.

Going through comments I had to remember old bearded anecdote, slightly modded - pistol man declares to a stranger, hey, I could wound you using just one finger! I also could do that, replies stranger. Who are you, asks pistol man. Photographer, replies stranger.

Looking at the right side of the pistol, the gap between the muzzle and under frame is not parallel, so to me it appears that it is indeed in mid-cycling after a round having been fired. As for lack of smoke, modern ammo doesn't smoke all that much, and when it does it disperses rapidly as the round is fired. So whatever evidence of smoke is probably off-frame to the right. The ejected round is also off-frame.

But I can't help but question your purpose for posting this. Not enough controversy?

The response you received was a bit excessive, but I think you need to see it in the light of what had already transpired in the comments for the photo - the OP rightly or wrongly apparently felt they were under attack and that you were simply piling on to give your lumps.

Well, I agree with your analysis, mostly.
But how do you explain the relaxed trigger finger ?
Did he move his finger back faster than the time it took the slide to close?
What shutter speed do you need to capture the slide perfectly unblurred ?
If you were lucky enough to capture the slide a the moment it stops its backwards movement and begins to close, then the empty case should be seen flying from the pistol.

BTW, I'm a pistol shooter myself and that photograph does not offend me as I clearly stated in my gallery post.

But my question, as the title of my post suggests, is about the insults received back and the lack of reaction of other members (save one) or moderators. Is verbal violence a normal thing these days ? Nobody notices it?

I'm not a native English speaker an maybe I got things wrong and when in Alabama someone calls you "ass" is a synonym of "pal" or "brother" o some other affectionate nickname...

Dear Joe,

That's my feeling too. It's a competent happy-snap: I don't believe that the "perfect timing" was much more than luck, and actually, even if you're a keen pistol shot (as I am: 1932/1933 Colt National Match .45 inherited from my father in law) it really isn't all that interesting, whether posed or not.

Of course I have my opinions on gun control, but they probably aren't what most people might expect.

Ok, I just re-read the posts in that Gallery thread and they have been edited removing the 11 times the author called me and other member an "ass". If you read it now it appears as a perfectly civilized dialog and you will not understand what was I talking about.

I don't know who did the editing, but as some posts (not mine) were deleted, I figure it was a moderator. Thanks for that.

Well the words have been erased, but the fact remains, is now normal to be addressed as an "ass" when other member does not like your opinion here? Worst that that, nobody reacts to that?

Is here like the mythical streets of NY, where you can drop dead in the middle of 5th Ave. and nobody cares?

Really, I don't. What does anyone gain by commenting on it? We may feel a little better for a while. But how much good does it do us? Or him? There's been some blatant nonsense posted on this thread: knee-jerk reactions. Has anyone's opinion been changed? I doubt it.

This is most assuredly not directed at you, though I know full well that more than once I have opened my mouth and been thought a fool. Not always accurately.

Why are so many people unable to understand that target shooting is a pleasurable activity?

I used to fence: foil, epée and sabre. I have friends who are into kendo and aikido. By your logic, swords were designed to kill people and can never be used for anything else. Spot the flaw in this argument.

My late father-in-law, in the 1930s captain of his university pistol-shooting team (Cornell), was excused jury duty in the 1980s (a trial for murder by firearm) when he said, "I've been shooting pistols for 50 years, and I've never pointed a gun at anyone."

Why should I not offend you by pointing out the inconsistencies in your thought processes, when you are perfectly happy to offend me by offering them?

Do you really have to interject these kinds of views here? Please, just accept that some of us hold different opinions but prefer to not force them on others.
