Well-known
Sad to report that influential director Agnès Varda passed away. Before becoming a film director, Varda was formally educated as a photographer and art historian at the École des Beaux-Arts. Although she became increasingly well-known in the 50's and the 60's as one of the leading voices (a female one, no less) of the Rive Gauche cinema movement (itself strongly associated with Nouvelle Vague), she always retained her love of photography. In fact she would come to say that still photography inspired sometimes her films.
See below a link with some of her photos. They are perhaps typical in terms of style of the period but I still find them interesting. Varda was known as a left-wing feminist even as she worked within the tradition of documentary realism, both for her films and photography: a combination of interests that is rather hard to come by today.

Fortunately, she did not work in obscurity.
Ever since the cinema verite of "Cleo From 5 To 7" shot on the streets of Paris in 1961, she has been rightly admired in France and around the world.

A sad news...I recently watched a series of documentaries- film about her and of course her work, including many interviews with her and friends. A great strong artist with a special vision.
