A fairly interesting description of Googles new camera, Clips is here:

https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/04/the-hard-tech-behind-googles-simple-clips-camera/

The synopsis is that it will automatically pick which videos and photos it thinks are best (as well as generating a clip from videos, so it's doing some editing). So basically they've developed an AI driven photo critic.

From a tech standpoint it is pretty incredible they're able to do this on that little piece of silicon. Typically this type of computation requires lots of GPUs to be done in any normal timeframe.

From a photo standpoint, I'm not sure I "welcome our new photographic overlords" but I am intrigued as to what criteria it uses to judge a good photo. What makes a great composition, what constitutes good lighting etc.

Eventually there will be a robot wandering the streets taking street shots.

It won't be long before they make a camera so 'automatic' that it'll go on holiday and take the pics for you and when it gets back it'll print them and then chuck 'em all in the bin for you.

I don't like the fact that something else (not even someone else) will be making those decisions for us. Yet another way in which actual choice is being taken away from people.
