Possibly the weakest part of the Alden-74 bulk film loader design are the two spring clips that serve to hold the cassette resevoir cover in place. The clips are held in place by two pins that are press-fitted. To remove the cover, one should press slightly back and lift using the small tab on the front of the cover. Sometimes, an Alden-74 can be found with the clips sprung as someone has pulled forward on the cover before lifting. This will allow the cover to fall off or be too loose to provide total security against light leaks.
It being a rainy day, I decided to tackle my one defective Alden bulk loader with sprung clips. Using duck-bill pliers, I grasped the TOP rivet's head and worked it in an arc while pulling outward with moderate force. The rivet popped free without too much problem. I then rotated the spring clip to the side and bent it slightly toward the back of the loader. Rotating the clip back into position, it was easy to seat the rivet using a small hammer. I repeated the procedure on the other clip. While my rivets seem tight enough, if necessary a small dab of epoxy glue or some other adhesive can be applied.
I now have another functional bulk loader.
