Well-known
On cleaning a lens, I'm stuck with oil-looking stains (regarding the rainbow-color-reflections), which won't come of using lens cleaning fluid. On this particular piece, I've used first aceton for dissolving grease (went on the glass as well) and ammoniak for getting rid of fungus-like damage. I fear the oily residu may come frmo the aceton, which was actually nail polish dissolver with 'something extra for protecting the lady's fingers'.
In the past I've done some very small repair jobs on camera's and one of the major things puzzling me is the chemistry involved. If I don't know, I tend to look on the internet, but the advises are seldomly unisono. This is what I've used/heard of so far (shoot me for probably doing horrifying things to beautiful peaces of equipment):
- aceton (in form of nail polish remover) for dissolving grease on focusing thread that was completely stuck: after dismantling a lens, I was left with two element groups stuck to eachother, which I just drowned in the aceton for a couple of hours -- did work out!
- ammoniak (50% in distilled water) for attacking something looking like fungus -- didn't work
- black bottle of 'lens cleaning fluid', no idea what it contains -- works on fingerprints, but nothing more
- i've never done lubrication of mechanic parts or adding grease to focusing threads, so I've got no idea what to use (I read the trick of refining MD40 into fine oil...); the only grease I have available is vaseline
Extra note: I live in Europe, so most of the USA-branded products I find on the internet are unknown overhere, so I've got no idea what substitute I should use
Do you know of some basic reference sheet on using generic chemistry products?
