Yesterday morning I sent an e-mail to the address listed on Leica's web site for the Allentown, NJ service center, asking if they were doing six-bit coding and asking what the turn-around time is.

So far, no reply.

This is ominous.

Do any of you have experience with these folks?

They respond much better to phone calls than to email. That said, I believe there are only three people or so who actually deal with customers in the repair department, so I get the feeling that they have great difficulty keeping up with emails. I agree that they should be better about it, but they are not, so you just need to call. If you go to voice mail, then wait a bit, but if you don't hear back call and talk to the operator. They are a small operation and they get overwhelmed.

I got this reply from Allendale by e-mail:

Please do not forward your lenses to our repair before November 1st. The six bit modification process is scheduled to start around the first week of November. The cost of the modification is $125.00 per lens. The process involves replacing the bayonet with a new bayonet ring. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

We recommend shipping via UPS/FedEx or whatever is most convenient for you. Include a note with your name, address, daytime phone and description of what you would like to have repaired. A repair notice will be mailed to you in approx 2-3 days after we receive the equipment. Please allow a few more days for that mail to reach you. Make a note of the serial number for your records.

I was at Allendale yesterday to drop off my camera for a quick repair before a shoot, and I also dropped off some lenses for coding. They said that it was very busy. They did recommend sending the lenses soon though, as they anticipate many many lenses coming in once the M8 starts shipping.
