Well...in your situation I'd offer him to call police, to help him with my illegal activities and by chance to clear up offer beating me or camera. I'd take out mobile, dial 112 and say "now I call or you can call from your phone". While using phone I'd snap his face in case he would do damage and run away, just to add to police report.

I'd probably not have ruined my roll of film over someone yelling at me without me having got one word through. After a few tries of not having been able to respond, I'd've started shouting back, most likely. I've gotten into arguments (and being close to getting in fights over being right) while walking around (though not camera related, yet), and it's usually possible to at least defuse the situation as long as the other party listens to what you're saying. We probably have about the same kind of personality, going by your post, but I feel you could've probably gotten through to him without wasting the roll.
I must say the interface of the blog is infuriatingly hard to navigate, it took minutes of clicking around to even find the comments. I recognize the sentiment from the comment I think you were talking about though, and it's not an uncommon one, unfortunately.

Sounds about like an American security guard on public property, thinking his store owns the street. I don't know what the proper response is, but me, I would probably say almost nothing, waiting for his batteries to run down, then walk away. Many people of small brainpower will take any response you offer as a springboard for dishing out more abuse, so don't give them anything to work with.

i think you (original poster) should have stood your ground a little more firmly. not only did you lose the shot you took, you lost the rest of the film. basically you let some guy on the street rob you of 3eur. film isn't free is it?
yes there is a lot to be said for attempting to disarm a conflict but if the law says you can photograph people on the street in your country then you should just call the police and have them deal with the problem.
don't get into fights - a french photographer recently learned this lesson the hard way in argentina (he was murdered by a would be camera thief).
one thing to consider is the cultural sensitivity of taking photographs - some muslims, in particular extreme muslims or devout muslims, may take offense to having their photo taken as there are some taboos about that. not that it matters since they're living in a western country, but you have to be prepared for the knee-jerk reaction.
i'd suggest improving your inconspicuous photo taking technique. if you can't make it look like you were photographing something behind the subject, find a way to get in front of the subject and make another attempt, just letting your subject walk into your frame.
