Why do people react to these new (rumoured) cameras as they do ... the manufactures plant a story on the inter-web months before thing is going to be available and people go off in this polarised extrinsically motivated Pavlovian frenzy ... I'm surprised each time it happens

... what would you say will be wrong with this one, when we get an impartial review (apart from the unsightly hump on the top)

I think it is because we have 90 years of film cameras to choose from, 50 years of which were very mature products. Digital is still findings its way before they will be considered mature. Those of us that like digital are still trying to find a camera that feels right compared to what we loved using with film.

Also, you damn well know people have been waiting for a small full frame digital that they can afford, so it is no secret why the new Sonys have caused a stir.

... I clearly didn't make it clear I was talking in general; not passing comment on this latest wundercam

Fair enough Sparrow, but my comment still works. I just think people are still looking for something they feel doesn't exist at their price point in digital yet.

... as you say 'fair enough' but my OP still works too ... as this is about a propensity to respond to an extrinsic motivation .. as were all the other cameras that "people were still looking for something they felt didn't exist"

I think with each new model and series of advances there comes new and until then unknown compromises.
It must be uncomfortable discovering and then adjusting to a compromise "you" did not know existed prior.
People get anchored around what they like or what they know. Everything that moves away from that anchor is compared back too the original anchor point.

For example:
A Leica Rangefinder user will compare these new EVF cameras to a Leica Rangefinder. The more similar to the anchor the more palatable the less similar to the anchor the less palatable.
And so the opining can begin.

Having threads and talking about it is simply commiserating or cheering depending on how far from your original likes the item is.
Some like what they know more than they know what they like. Those to me seem to be the most present voices when it comes to taking sides.
Others are simply excited about the new technology and new possibilities.
I enjoy posts from both sides and have posted from both perspectives myself.
It does seem to get pretty wacky at times. Especially as of late.

Cheers!

No argument from me...

My wife and her facebook friends are always buzzing about the latest entertainment rumors. Long long before any of them knows what they are talking about.

TV is loaded with "talk shows" where people yak yak yak about the stupidest stuff.

Go to a barroom and listen to mindless chatter that goes on at the bar.

Hey, if everyone else can do it, so can we. :p

It seems there are a lot of people are waiting for the 'Messiah' camera.
The one true camera that will do it all.
Cameras are rumoured, cameras are released. Inevitably the cameras won't live up to all the expectations. So the crowds hail the next rumoured camera and the cycle continues.

an unknown % of the frenzy postings are false PR

actually done by paid PR firms
that specialize in making a particular dealer or product look good on the net

its not illegal - so far as I know
apparently the false paid for review seems to be very un-regulated
and under the radar

and there is also no way to know if the source is legit or not
-- other than being a bit suspicious of new members without a track record on the forum.

this morning over coffee I was very aware of this
reading a glowing review
on one real turd of a movie

They do it to make you think you have to have it, NOW.

Now that does put a different complexion on things.

I don't get it either, with virtually all such frenzy being for merely evolutionary advances, ie little more image quality/ smaller size/ etc, as opposed to revolutionary changes, ie advances that open up whole new areas of picture taking possibilities.

I always ask myself just what any of these new cameras would do for my photography.
Very little I fear .

.. yes I've noticed that for a few years now. I'm surprised though by how far ahead they are thinking, one of last year's fuji promoters had joined over a year in advance of the product being released.

However, I was more interested as to why otherwise sensible people would have such strong views about something that was not yet available, each time this happens

Something I've also noticed is the very sharp practice of company reps disguised as ordinary users, deployed to defuse negative comment about their company's product, whilst denying any sort of affiliation with said company.
