Hi all.

Right; my expedition to the Alps is slowly coming together. Aside from minor considerations like sleeping bags and ice screws, I'm working on the finer points of the camera gear 😉

I'm taking to BC:
* Canonet QL-17
* Zorki 1 carrying an I-61 L/D
* Newly acquired Spotmatic II (thanks, Kim!) with 24mm, 135mm and 55mm lenses: the former two for longer/wider than the RFs, the 55 in case either of the RFs die!

Obviously, I'll not be carrying all three on routes; I can pick and choose what to take out on a day-to-day basis. I'm thinking Velvia 100 in the Canonet, Delta 100 in the Zorki, and a bit of both in the Spotmatic.

What I can't decide on is what filters to take. Do people recommend yellow or orange filters for B&W through the I-61 L/D, or is it contrasty enough already? And is there any need to take a UV filter for B&W? I've never heard of someone doing so. 😕

For colour, I'll leave a polariser permanently attached. Is there need for a UV filter as well as the polariser, or will the polariser cut out enough UV to negate the need for yet another pair of air-glass interfaces?

I'll not be much higher than 4000m at any time, if that helps.

Finally - is there yet an altitude record for Camera and Coffee? 😎

Cheers,
Jamie

Jamie, I think you'll want the orange for more striking results -- darker sky and more rock details. Make sure it's a multicoated filter for the least chance of flare. No need for a UV filter if you have the orange on there already. Also, no need for a UV filter for color film if you're going to have the polarizer on there. It will do the job well, probably better than a UV filter.

Sounds like a fun trip- but don't stack your filters either the one you want or the UV (which you don't need on your lenses anyway -they are UV-protected, but if you stack two filters you'll quadruple the flare -you're in a high-contrast situation anyway!

Right-ho, Jaap. That's what I'd suspected.

So I need a 40.5mm orange to live on the I-61 and a 48mm polariser for the canonet: I have everything for the M42 glass already, because they come in *normal* filter sizes 🙄

Anyone in the UK got either of these they want to offload, before I start hunting through the 'bay? 😉

Cheers
Jamie

Jamie - you might b better off with a step up ring 48-49mm. 49mm filters and hoods are easier to find. I have one somewhere I can lend to you if you need it.

Thanks for the advice and the offer, Zuikologist. I'll try to source one myself, though; it's probably the sort of thing I'll need again and again!

Cheers,
Jamie
