Hi, forgive me if this has been asked before, but does anyone know of an alternative hood for the 35mm Lux ASPH, preferably a circular vented hood? Does anyone have a link or pictures of one? I find the standard one that is supplied a real pain to take off and put on quickly.
Thanks,
Tim

The original 35 Summilux hood although it basically works fine never really felt right to me. The grip tightening ring is much the same as the too close aperture ring and I found myself moving it unintentionally, and it just didn't work as any of my other clip-on hoods did. I also had to think about the flexible hood cap coming off in the bag or losing it when it when it was on the lens/camera over my shoulder.

As an alternative I bought a 12547 hood for the 2.8/28 Elmarit which in design is much the same as the original hood for the 1st version Summilux aspherical. It a faster clips-on design and the hood cap is a spring hard plastic that stays on better.

Don't know why Leica changed the design to something they hadn't ever used before. Maybe it was cost of making the older style.

good tip. Your experience seems identical to mine. I keep moving it unintentionally and finding after half a roll that it hasn't been sitting square... I'll see if I can get hold of the hood you've mentioned.
Thanks.

I'm afraid I have a very low opinion of Leica hoods in general and have replaced most of them with eBay dealer heavystar's hoods. I use a 46mm wide non-vented heavystar hood on my 35mm Summilux ASPH and have found it more than adequate.

I see Popflash has one for sale now in the classified.

I must have missed it because I can't find it now.
Has anyone out there tried the 12451 hood, the newer version of the one you mentioned? I'm wondering if either of these clip in to the 35'lux's grooves properly to prevent them going on funny angles. I really do prefer the old round hoods, but that's just me.

Just looked at this hood on e-bay. Does it block much of the viewfinder compared to the Leica one?

Dealers shop name is Heavy2stars Photo Gear and I just checked if they have stock and they don't, so I don't know what you saw. You need to go to the shop and enter 46mm wide. Also there seem to be none on eBay at all.

It blocks less of the VF than the Leica hood. Even with no hood at all the lens would block a bit of the VF. I'm attaching a pic below so you can see the heavystar hood on the lens; it's not that much bigger than the diameter of the lens barrel.

Yes the 12451 hood for the 28mm/2.8 V.4 and 28mm/2 ASPH does fit perfectly on the 35mm/1.4 ASPH. It is bigger and more obtrusive than the standard 35mm/1.4 ASPH hood, but more secure and has a more standard clip on system with 2 push tabs on the sides.
