The discussion was warm, but not particularly abusive. I was more offended by the closing of the thread than by anything said in it. There were some moderately dumb comments, but so what? The thread still interested most of the posters, and I think people on both sides were still learning something from it.

All this information about Bob Shell and his case was on The online Photographer 31 august I never saw any need to discuss it here and was surprised to see the thread in the first place.

I am against unnecessary censorship in general, but in the Bob Shell thread the insult exchanges built up quickly and deeply. Since the Bob Shell case is being discussed elsewhere, it is maybe a good idea to reduce friction in the website.

I don't blame those from southern states for getting offended--blanket stereotypical statements/assumptions about the quality of people based on geographic location?

I am very interested in Bob Shell's case, and I found the discussions both interesting and rude in nature. It may be a reasonbale OFF TOPIC thread to discuss the different approaches in law, but leave insults out.

the topic was only about the unfortunate death of a young flower of the south and the trial of the accused, who happen to be an older semi well known photographer.
it is only when the thread got to" who's got the best judical system"
and if it is not like ours, then you are not of a sophisticated culture like ours is etc.
I can see why this thread was closed.

It took on the usual Europe is best tone, like many "discussions" on this board.

I have to say, the thread's tone seemed mild compared with other ones I've seen here that have gone on much longer without getting closed. Maybe because it didn't have to do with Leicas....

I was not offended by the thread, but the moderators may have their own set criteria when to step in.

I have seen rougher threads than this one not closed, but the owner decides and probably he was right.
Some felt strongly personally insulted by the fact a law system has been critizised by others (me for instance), even if there was no intention of personal insulting. I repeat, I do apologize to those who felt so. I like southern rock, Texmex food and chopped cars, but the heck I've the right to express my opinion about a law system.
As I am concerned, I have learned a lot about the exitability of some people and will chose my words more carefully in the future, and I also learned that americans and europeans think quite different about jury and judge courts, which has historical reasons.
To come back on topic - my new rally color Luigi case should arrive soon. Yeah.

My fault...I was thinking about another deleted thread from a few moments ago.
Well we should probably get back to discussing how good the M8 feels in our hands.
Wish I had an M8.

SPEAKING OF CONTROVERSIES....
How much media coverage is there on the "death of Diana" is there in the UK?

I must say we've had far less civil threads here that ran for much longer without getting closed. Nor did I read much of "the usual Europe is best" sentiment in there.
I don't know how to say this without screaming censorship, which I don't want to do, but personally I am getting a bit annoyed at the frequency with which threads are closed at the moment; some of the more prominent recent deletions (from the commentless disappearance of the "sicko" thread to Magus' user account) also seemed somewhat problematic to me. Certainly I can't tell Stephen what kind of a site to run, but site owners (and moderators) have a choice to which extent they want to impose their own values and worldviews and ideas of a civil discussion upon the medium in which they invite others to participate. The moderators are doing a good job, but IMHO a bit too much of it.
Where is RFF going? If this is meant to be a sanitized lens discussion site, then at least as far as I'm concerned, much of my time here is being wasted. If, on the other hand, the point is to have a community of various people united by a common interest, then the occasional item of dissent is inevitably going to crop up, and just clamping down on that with closures and deletions is not a long-term solution.
Maybe I'm just repeatedly reading the wrong threads.

I think I have a different view of censorship than most.
I tend to think of it as limits on my right to express myself. Since I have no “right” to express myself here, I would never think of limits imposed by the site owner as censorship.

I think it's all been taken too seriously. This place is for discussing photography and enjoying everything that has to do with that. All this does is take away from that. No, I don't have to take part in these threads, but it's hard to ignore
