The only better deal I have seen was someone once got a Leica M3 with a Summicron 50mm for $5 at Goodwill.
I have managed to waste a lot of money and time going to garage sales. The only time I walked away with any camera stuff was once with a not-that-great deal on a Yashica GSN, and when I went to a photographer estate sale where they knew what everything was worth so the prices were good but not steals.
I've wasted plenty of time myself, I don't think I've ever gotten a deal before this. Just lots and lots of junk. Like you said, most of the time the people will do the research so they list things pretty close to what they're worth. This was a pretty small town in Iowa though.

Oh boy. This is a legal robbery !!!
Garage sale is like searching gold, lots of years with nothing and suddenly a big gem.
Man, keeper.

My M5s need red dots!
Every time I read a post about Nikon RF cameras I get immensely glad I didn't sell mine. And I had a buyer ready to spring on it!
BTW, congratulations on your dad's find and help! I wish the people around me did that. My inlaws used to go to sales all the time and once did get me an obscure Kodak Tourist (I never managed to get the thing open... it's a folder camera) in less than stellar shape. I have used it as paper weight...
But back to your lucky find and garage sales, I gave up on them. Only once, after looking at loads of smelly P&S cameras, did I run into something... but didn't buy it: an Argus C3 with a very cloudy finder, in the box. They wanted $20 for it. i spent the money on a toaster oven that still worked.
You'll see how that 50mm Nikon lens is really superb. And yes, it's a bit louder than a Leica, but once you take it out in the field, it's just as stealthy as any Leica and nobody will hear the shutter. I speak from experience!
