American Road Trip 1979 on Kodachrome

#USA05-21 descent from Clifftop, Havasupai trail, Grand Canyon, 06 May 1979.
The trails in US National Parks were of much higher standard than those in Australian National Parks, although the Aussie ones give more of a wilderness feeling.

The trail disappears into the narrow ravine you can see at the bottom of this valley.

#USA05-29 Early morning next day on the Havasupai trail, preparing to depart down the canyon after spending the night on this rock ledge under an overhang. We had sleeping bags but no tents or tarps. A small fire to ward off the desert chill at this altitude on a clear night. The view is looking back up towards our departure point, Clifftop (out of view). It was going to be a long climb out. 07 May 1979.

The group I was with can be seen on the lower right. Note the person on horseback in the dry watercourse in the centre. In the far background, a glimpse of the rim gives perspective on how far down we've come.

In narrower sections undercuts like this provide an indication of the power of flash floods. A native Indian on horseback leads another horse on the ascent.

The yellow is completely uncontaminated. No E6, C41 or ECN-2 film can do that, even the four layer Fuji films. Kodachrome was beautiful.

#USA05-16 Route 66 (E Andy Devine Av), Kingman, AZ. 06 May 1979.
Those silos and tower on the right are still there (November 2023), but almost everything else has changed. Next stop: Supai Reservation.

In '79 when you were going thru there Lynn, Kingman had some spectacular motor lodges on Route 66. Many were still there last time I stopped in 2015, but in great dis-repair. It was a very "happening town" in its heyday.

Below Havasu Falls is Mooney Falls. The trail disappeared over the edge of a cliff, with a steep climb down with the help of a chain. The canyon continues until finally joining the Colorado River.
