Have an opportunity to accompany my wife on a work trip and hang out in Amsterdam for a few days around the middle of January.
Haven't been in almost 20 years and was wondering if anyone has any opinions/suggestions on things to do and what it's like in mid winter. I assume similar to New York where I live weather wise. Basically would it be a fun trip for a long weekend? As I recall it seems like a good place to wander with a camera and site in cafes, etc.

Yeah, it's probably a lot like NYC in the winter -- fairly chilly, sometimes sun, sometimes slushy snow. Although the weather's changed everywhere, so I can't say for sure.
I love wandering around Amsterdam, especially in the less-crowded off season. I prefer heading off to the Jordaan, a more residential district, rather than the very busy and touristy area just south of the train station.

yeah, expect anything but clear blue skies.. very foggy and wet now, lots of snow for a few weeks before that.
Still, lots of small cafes and of course the FOAM museum
