That's really me
Xtol comes in the odd 5 liter packet. I use to mix it in a bucket which was easy enough but getting it out of the bucket without spilling some was a challenge. If your doing this in tight spaces it can lead to a mess.
I tried mixing the solution in a single gallon (3.8L) but the power didn't fully dissolve, even a second time raising the temperature in hopes of dissolving the power didn't succeed.
Just finished mixing a new batch of Xtol using an easy and clean way that reduces the change for a lot of spills.
I should have taken pictures during the process but it didn't occur to me until I finished. I mixed Xtol using this method but it can easily be used for any powdered chemistry.
The first thing you need is a large 2.5 gallon dispenser. I mix Xtol with distilled water so it was fairly easy to find. I was after the 2.5 gallon container.
All you need is the 2.5 gallon container, a second container that holds 5 liters, a funnel, and a container(s) to pour your Xtol into. Some extras that will help are a measuring cup which I'm certain you'll have if you develop your film, a thermometer helps but room temperature is enough for the powder to dissolve.
Empty out the 2.5 gallon container by pulling off the entire dispenser tap assembly and decant the water into your secondary container. I used two 1 gallon jugs.
Following the instructions prepare 4 liters of water to mix solution A. Using a funnel I poured 3 liters into the 2.5gal container and kept the last liter in my measuring beaker. It will come in handy in case the powder cakes up in the funnel.
With the 3 liters in the 2.5gal container I opened powder bag A of Xtol and poured it down the funnel, after that the 4th liter of water in my measuring beaker went in. Place the dispenser tap back on and shake for a few minutes. No mixing stick needed, shaken not stirred.
After powder A is fully dissolved remove the dispenser cap and place the funnel back on the 2.5gal container. Pour the 5th liter of water in the measuring beaker and open powder B of Xtol. Pour powder B into the funnel slowly, if it thickens pour water from the beaker to flush it down. When all of powder B is in replace the dispenser cap and shake. This will take longer to dissolve.
After powder B is fully dissolved decant your Xtol into your bottle of choice. I pour them into 5 1L bottles.
