I've written Kodak off completely as a (now) unreliable supplier. I'm using home-formulated D-76 and D-72 (Dektol equivalent) and am exploring the possibilities of Mytol as a Xtol replacement. (The jury is still out with me about the incremental improvement of Xtol over freshly prepared D-76; I can probably live with my own D-76 forever, BTW). I can buy sodium thiosulfate locally for 60 cents/lb and sodium sulfite for about 50 cents/lb (both in bulk) so my fixers costs about $2/gallon.

I mix my D76 and D76-like variations from scratch as well. It's truly the best way to go. I recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Are these 'recipes' for developers readily available.

Achell's book on fim developing is a primary reference on developer recipes. Plenty of them on websites as well, particularly if you're interested in B&W reversal processing.

It seems likely that the darlings in those suits will be killing off Tri-X in any event.

Supporting the little guys, notably Ilford, is in the interest of those hoping to buy B&W materials in 2011 and later.

Your opinion may differ, and in some cases here, clearly does.

I don't care for Kodak, but man will I cry the day Plus-X won't be available anymore. That film is magical IMO.

Isn't Lucky SHD100 supposed to be very very similar to Plus-X?

Have not tried 100, but SHD400 (in 120 format) is a very thick and stiff film base. It comes out of developing with a strong curl, and is a pain to scan. Even several months later, it has the strong curl.

I dev'd my SHD400 135 film) in caffenol ( http://shardsofphotography.blogspot.com/2007/03/developing-film-in-coffee-1-roll-of_06.html ) recently and I didn't experience much curl. As it was, the dry film was straight as an arrow. It only got curled after I had wound up the film for safe keeping (and soon scanning). I'm now considering just letting the film hang from the wire and cut off pieces of film for scanning.
