I find strong correlations between certain photographs and certain songs. Maybe this is a bit abstract for an actual discussion, but I would be curious to read anyone's pairings of songs and pictures. Their own pics, ideally. I chose not to post actual photos in the interest of conserving bandwidth/drive space, etc.

For me, this photo : http://www.shutterflower.com/bwocean4size.jpg

sounds like Aphex Twin's "Blue Calx" from "Selected Ambient works, Vol. 2"

and this one : http://www.shutterflower.com/facepage.htm

sounds like Coldplay's "Amsterdam" from "A Rush of Blood to the Head"

Sinestesia? The crossed association of sensations to stimuli that have nothing to do with the sensation, like saying that a song has a particular flavor or that sounds have colors?

Kinda nice way to refer to things, themirana...

I've found it works better with people. Some individuals I know make me think of something gloriously almondy, sweet and subtle, yet not sugary, just like almond marzipan. Others (not my favorite) are just downright salty. 😱

Now that you mention it... I'll see what I think of with photos (like the Vietnam shots that make me think of Black Sabbath guitar chords á la Oliver Stone's Platoon (the 80s movie).

Interesting! 🙂

I've thought that myself Shutterflower. It's not so much a cerebral association as it is a feeling lifted from a photo that is similar to a feeling lifted from a song. Bring the two together and the strength of them is heightened. Those specific two works probably were never meant to play off each other, but it works beautifully! There's such a strong correlation.. just look at the cinema and the way they tie the mediums together in a much more obvious way.

when I shoot,

when I shoot,

I usually get ideas for shooting, as far as for compositions that have nothing to do with spontaneity, from music. When I am preparing to shoot a model or a landscape, or when I am going out to find inspiration, I play music. Music is very visual to me. There is something musical about photography too, something musical about walking down a street with a camera in your hand or sitting outside a coffee shop and catching moments as they pass.

What sort of music do you listen to when photography is on your mind? How about when you shoot, do you prefer to listen to music while shooting?

I just got curious about this because the relation between the two creates such a fertile space for creativity for me.
