An Odd 135mm f3.5 Question

I recently found a Canon 135mm f3.5 for sale that seems to be in good condition, except the lens barrel can be unscrewed and separated from the central part with the elements in it. I was also considering a Jupiter-11, which is very similar optically, but this lens was a good deal. Is this a defect, or something to help with cleaning the rear elements, or what?

The lens is made that way on purpose. As I recall, you use an adapter to attach the front of the lens to a Visoflex type housing for reflex photography. I have two different Canon 100mm f/3.5 lenses that do this. I also have a Canon 135mm f/3.5 that I can't unscrew. It seems some versions unscrew and some don't.

Spavinaw is correct, the lens was made that way on purpose.

You could also adapt some late Canon rangefinder lenses to fit the Canonflex SLR which came out in 1959. You unscrewed the lens group and mounted that on a special adaptor Canon made. Canon made several adaptors I believe, to fit a particular focal length.

I'll say this, the Canon 135/3.5 is the best long lens I've shot. Way better than my 90 Elmar or any of the others. I highly recommend you get one. I've had three, all were killer. I'm sure you've seen this post: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68125
