Android and Galaxy S5 users

I'm really disappointed with todays Apple announcement of the new iPhone 6. While it is a nice looking phone they did not change the camera. I've done photo comparisions between my iPhone 5S and a friends newly aquired Galaxy S 5 and the S5 blows the iPhone out of the water.. A lot of difference between 8MP and 16MP.....

So...I can buy out my current contract and upgrade to the S5 for $125.00 which I have decided to do..

My question now is since I will be installing some camera/photo apps which is a good one for good Black & White photos. I see that camera 360 ultimate is available which does good B&W but are there others..and what is a reasonably accurate light meter app??

Any other suggestions on what I should check out??

I only use the camera phone for family snaps, don't use any special apps for it.

For light meter, I love the Pocket light meter on my iphone..perfect exposure every time.
 
re iPhone - They did upgrade the sensor, but left the same megapixel resolution
it remains to be how improved the images are vs the 5s and how they compare to the S5

I've printed 5s images on 16x24 and it comes out really nice

the low light performance of the 5s is poor

I'm assuming that with OIS and PDAF, the 6+ pictures will be sharper than the comparable 5s

all other things equal, I agree that I'd rather have 16 vs 8 mp, but at some point pixel count reaches "good enough" and other factors come into play.

I can't really complain about the 5S quality but if the above link is real then the S5 should be much better..

I do agree the 5S's low light performance is poor..but my test between the 5S and S5 have shown the S5 to be far better in both low and daylight..

I think the answer here is also the quality of the optics. Poor quality optics matched with high MP stil creates poor quality images but add high quality optics them the difference is obvious.. Checking the various specs online seems to show the S5 has high quality optics compared to the 5S and since the optics on the 6 are basicly the same........

The upgraded sensor may help but how much???
 
This is amusing.

It's a cell phone and a communications device, not a camera.
If you want a camera, buy a camera.

That said, I've sold 11x14 inch photos made with my iPhone 4S. They're remarkably good quality.

But I'd never think of calling it a camera. ;-)

What's wrong with using a phone as a camera? It was builtin so why not make the most of it?

I already have several cameras but there are times I want to carry something light...and the phone is just right for that time..

I agree they are good but newer ones are better than the newest iPhone..

Not just the camera but the overall (??) improvements of the iPhone are disappointing... I think they were more interested in a smart watch..

Since Jobs died the company has been in a tail spin...
 
My main concerns with a smart phone are call clarity, battery life, quality of the music app - then the operation of the camera.

Apple increased the physical sensor size - but not the pixel count on the iPhone 6 - which means they increased the size of each pixel They also are using a slightly wider aperture - which will be f/2.2.

as for the original question:
for B&W conversions, i like vignette (on my S3 running omni). there should be a resolution limited free version to try out.

I had Vignette on my old SIII and will be using it again when I upgrade to the S5. I also found that Camera 360 is available for Android which has excellent B&W conversion capabilities on IOS so I'll be trying it out..

I used Pocket Light Meter on IOS for metering but It has low reviews for Android so I'll be looking into others..

I wouldn't imagine any but the smallest percentage of the world's population care what it may actually be called and as time passes I'd imagine the word will have a very different definition as many words do over enough time. Whether your handheld communications device can share with the rest of the world instantly, whether it can find you the best Gong Bao chicken in Gothenburg or whether it can print at 11x14 with good enough quality will be among the things people will always care about.

Just saying, Juliet was probably right, who cares about the name?

More like "a lot of difference in lens quality" - a recent test by a German computer magazine concluded that the image quality of the S5 (16MP) and S5mini (10MP) is equivalent (except in low light) - both hit the resolution limit at slightly above 6MP. Pixel count does not really say much about image quality, other than setting a theoretical (but almost never reached) top limit for resolution. So it might still be that Apple have improved the optical system rather than increasing the sensor resolution...
 
I use an S4 (writing this through it)
I use the stock camera app (it seems to have more controls than apple's). The phone came with a 2 yr 50gb Dropbox subscription and I use that to have the files around easily. Each time the phone has Wifi, it uploads them.
For editing on phone I'm not that ortodox. I have grown fond of VSCOcam, which is a cam+edit app but use only the editing capabilities. It is kind of a "filter and film simulation" app, but using it mildly yields nice results.
For editing Snapseed is a must according to many people. It hasn't grow much on me however.
I'm not much into B&W however.

On the S4 and watching fine detail, The lens does not quite resolve the 13MP. Well. Useful for downsampling or cropping a bit.
I find funny some statements about the cameras having 6 element lenses. Just like a planar!
Also amusing that my S4 and Apple iPhones 4s to 6 carry Sony camera modules. So hardware wise there is quite a bit in common.

As of iPhone 6. It is said to have a 1/2.3 sensor but still not officially confimed AFAIK. Overall on camera matters it still isn't a breakthrough.
 
Hueless is a well thought out black and white app, though I fear only for iPhone.

On my iPhone 5 it is occasionally buggy – slow to turn on and sometimes freezes, but the results are impressive, with a full range of filters.

The developers also have a colour version (Huemore), which I haven’t tried.

When I upgraded from the Galaxy SIII to the iPhone I realized within a week I made a mistake..

I like having a camera in my pocket for those times I don't want to carry a camera with a couple of lens plus I have made a few shots worthwhile I would have otherwise missed had I not had a camera/phone..

If I carry a camera whether it be a film camera, digital DSLR, or camera/phone I want it to be a really good one..

I will agree I tend to be somewhat picky... :angel: :angel:
