California (Bay Area, Northern) Another bay area get-together?

Ted,
We all have our interpretations of what a title means. I personally think you are reading WAY too much into the project and title. But that's your interpretation, and that's fine. But, it is a 24 hour period of time during which we will photograph NB. Period. So '24 hours of North Beach" is an accurate and perfectly valid title.

I never said anything about it being anything other than that. Just a bunch of people photographing an area over 24 hours.

And there are such things are show descriptions that usually give a bit more info on a show, btw.

(slightly defensive - you do call into question the "value" of such a project into which I have invested much energy and passion)

but I would cringe at the implication of any artistic or cultural value to a project of this type unless it were called "a random photo shoot of the North Beach area of San Francisco on August xx, 2006."

I don't think you'll be caputuring what generations of folks who lived here have seen in their eyes nor will you feel what people who have lived here felt even 50 years ago. You'll have some mix of old, but not real old, but mostly new cell phone heads and starbuck sipping n00bs to the area.

My grandparents lived through the 1906 earthquake near North Beach, and they will be shaking in their graves to think that some Leica toting kids are trying to depict their old neighborhood by running around it in 24 hrs.

Ed,
I'm still using the same 1280 with EEM and Permajet Alpha that I have for a while, plus some Ilford Galerie and Kirkland for the glossy stuff. But I might be switching to Innova Cotton Smooth since it's supposed to be the same coating as Alpha and Jobo are morons with distribution. But I'll try and bring some of those in. Interesting differences in dmax that are quite visible, I think.

Oops! wrong thread, Allan? :)

...I will be in SF this Saturday at American Cyclery on Stanyan around 11 am. I will have either a chrome Leica MP or black M6 on my shoulder. All the best, Bob

I bought my first mountain bike at American many years ago. It's a very good cyclery.

:)

Who cares what the photo project is called? Sheesh. North Beach isn't a museum. It is what it is and if that includes people who annoy you and make grandparents spin in graves, I guess that's too bad. At least someone is taking pictures of something that aren't just snapshots.

Ed, I like to wander past the cycle shops on Stanyan and ogle sleek, fast road bikes that cost way more than a month's rent (and here in San Francisco, that's really sayin' something) but until this city becomes considerably flatter I don't see myself hitting the pavement anytime soon.

Anyway, getting back to the thread subject, I think it would be most fun to meet up and put some faces with names and have some drinks and then maybe people can make plans to get together and shoot other times. If everyone's just going to split up to take photos, well, I can do that any time. To me that only makes sense if we're all using digital cameras (eek) and can share things immediately.

Well yeah, you can call it anything you want. You can even call it "A Photographic History of California" if you like. whatever...

About photo developing -- it seems that 1 hr film developers and enlargers are plentiful, and it's not a bad thing to support local vendors, imho.

Or one can use polaroids :)

(And yes, before someone asks, you can take polaroids with rangefinder cameras if you include some 4x5 LF cameras ;) )

or cell phone cameras

or cell phone cameras

this will also allow the tourist/photographers to keep a live line to 911 in case any shady looking folks come into view. Plus, you can airblog or flicker the images to a common blog site and be all ready to review the images back at the bar or coffee shop, no waiting for the mini-lab

Greaaat discussions to have over a couple of beers (or sodas) :)

Well, I guess this isn't the right place for that type of shooting. Message gotten.

So when are we getting together, anyway?

How about these options?

1) Saturday Aug 5th (day),
2) Wedn Aug 9th (evening), or
3) Sunday August 13th (day)?

in guerneville?
ahahaa
not like sam wo's or golden dragon or ocean on clement etc etc etc
if i lived in sf i would weigh 300#

August 5th I'll be in Davis at a conference. It isn't over until 5 PM and I'll be pretty freaking wiped out by the time I get back.

I think the other two days would work.

I'd say the only good thing about Sam Wo's is that they are open late. Their food generally sucks. I've had onchoy that was soggy and with very flavour-less fu-yu, their (HK-style) beef chow fun tasted burnt (which I
didn't think was possible) and their Tofu Fa was way watery.

If you can stand the occasional rat running across the glass ceiling or the corner over by the kitchen then Hing Lung has some really good congee (the duck/preserved eggs one is pretty good) - the fried bread that you can order with it is also pretty good.

Ok, now I'm hungry.

august 5, or august 9 is okay by me. aug 13 is not as good. there's a music get-together i go to on the second and fourth sundays of the month.

Wednesday...she's a no good for me. Tuesdays and Thursdays work better for me on a weeknights. The 5th is good, and I could do 13th, too.
