Bad news for Indiana photographers -- Jack's Camera in Muncie will close their physical store. They will continue their robust online business, however, which is how most people know about them. This is a real shame -- I loved rummaging around Jack's. But, these are the times we live in -- not really a surprise. Before I came to Muncie, I only knew three things about the town -- Middletown (The Lynds' influential sociology study), Ball State (where I work), and Jack's Camera.

I'm not surprised. Jacks was one of only three camera stores left in Indiana. The others are Roberts in Indianapolis and Gene's in South Bend. Fort Wayne's last camera store, Sunny Schick, closed a few yrs ago. Sad.

CV-19..is going to be the last coffin nail in a lot of moms and pops businesses at street level..
It did mine..
Its just not worth the risk anymore..for anyone..

I think Gary Camera is still there. I'm in Gary pretty often and need to stop by but I always forget how for south (or not?) they are on Broadway.

Always wanted to get to Jack's. I do like to browse their eBay store for odds and ends. Got my Leica IIIf from Gary Camera.

Their store was neat, a big place in an old building in downtown Muncie. I bought a few used things there over the years, but never anything new. Their prices were HIGH on new stuff.

I only know there's a Muncie from The Hudsucker Proxy (Go Eagles!) but it sounds like it'll be much the poorer for losing Jack's. Great to hear they'll still exist online though so that not all is lost.

I'll hope the store will be back one day in some kind of improbable but not unfathomable full circle of retail post-COVID.

Yeah, a highly-fictionalized Muncie is in a couple of movies (Hudsucker Proxy, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind) but I didn't put those together until after I moved here. I'm still looking for those big mountains where Richard Dreyfuss watched the alien spaceships fly over at the beginning of Close Encounters. And of course, Pawnee Indiana on Parks and Recreation has several connections to Muncie. (The wall map of Pawnee is a Muncie map upside down.)

Too bad. Hate to see it.

When I was attending undergrad, in the late 1960’s; it was during the summer I worked at Target. Their second store! A shopper could find plenty of photography stuff, darkroom chemicals, paper, lots of film and SLR cameras.

Fun days.

Just bought some stuff from Gary Camera a few months ago. Of course, that was online, have not been to their physical store. And have dealt with Roberts on numerous occasions, but again, online, not in the physical store.

Best,
-Tim
