Another new R-D1 owner

I've been reading this forum for a couple months now and have just purchased a camera. I was much encouraged by the positive feelings on this group. I would like to thank you all for providing feedback and especially Sean for the excellent reviews that helped in deciding to buy this unique camera. I am very impressed with the general feel and quality of construction. I am happy to report that my camera doesn't seem to have the problems some have encountered that I have read about here. Mine is a #45xx. I have one question/quirk regarding the viewfinder. On the right side is a somewhat iritating reflection/glare running from top to bottom. It goes out just beyond the 28mm frameline. I was able to inspect another camera and it was identical so I presume it is common to all. Would someone confirm this? Looking forward to having a great deal of fun with this camera!

Any bad pixels, even at ISO 200? Im considering returning mine. I get about 8 or so in JPEG mode ISO200-1600, in RAW I get NONE. Odd.

The glare thing appears on my copy as well but only if my eye isn't exactly centered. I noticed it when I first got the camera and haven't noticed it much since.

Ditto for me -- it's there, but only if I look for it.

I believe this is a reflection off the edge of the diagonal mirror that reflects the framelines into the finder eyepiece. If you hold the camera about a foot away from your eye and look into the edge of the eyepiece from about a 45-degree angle, you can actually see a tiny reflection of yourself in it!

If the mechanics of your vision permit it, an eyecup might help by preventing light leakage in through the eyepiece.

I also got my R-D1 yesterday after selling my Digital-SLR. Enough of carrying around so much weight ;-)

Bought a Summicron 2,0 50mm and it seems, that I have to learn a lot now - it is my first rangefinder camera at all! Please keep your fingers crossed that I will be satisfied with this camera...

Sounds more like JPEG artifacts. A software issue.

No no, its not JPEG artifacts, its DEAD pixels. I know what a dead and hot pixel are, and i have 8, even at ISO200. 3 of them are BIG ones. Ive been into digital for 8 years and have owned nearly every DSLR. Only one prior had a bad pixel and it was a Fuji S2. Ive never seen such shoddy QC as far as that goes (with the Rd1) - Im happy otherwise.

You don't really sound very happy, Steve. Get that RD1 back to the seller and get a new one/replacement. No use in complaining about it indefinitely. 🙂

I did. Just talked with B&H this morning and a new one is being shipped while this one goes back.

I was NT happy when a $3k camera has so many dead pixels. Its not acceptable even for a $500 camera. Above I was just pointing out that it WAS dead pixels and NOT JPEG artifacts.

If epson can update the firmware to include pixel mapping it would solve all dead pixel problems 🙂

I agree, the right side glare issue is not a deal breaker with me and I don't notice it much anymore. The first time I looked in the finder I was in a dim room with a bright window on the left (the worst case) and it was the first thing I noticed. Love the camera!!
