Another R-D1 battery topic...

So I'm getting about 50 raw files on my rinkydink transcend 80x SD card, on a 1650mah battery and about 40 raw on the OEM epson battery. Think I need some new batteries? I'm avoiding the LCD at all cost, but pull it out every once an a while...

Also getting some faster cards, maybe this will keep things writing faster? Coming from nikon land, lots of battery life is nice, but for a non-motor driven, non-af camera it really baffles me. Must be the tiny battery...

Any thoughts?

regardless of how fast of a card you get, the camera itself is still going to write very slowly. obviously offloading images off the card into thepc will be quicker.

yeah the battery is pretty small. personally i view it like film. instead of opening the back to drop in film every 24-36 shots, i'm opening the bottom to drop in a new battery every 50-60. i don't use the lcd and my oem battery is about the same as my 1600mah Sido batteries. i have a fujifilm battery that is almost hopeless.

I've had pretty good luck with the battery. I should have a backup, but... so far haven't needed one.

I just did a shoot last night and used 1600 asa, no flash, raw got 81 images and the battery was not even 1/2 used...it's stock and I have a backup that I have never used.....I very rarely use the LCD....maybe once in 25 images....

battery lasting for only 50 shots sounds rather poor ...
any chance it might be old and in need of a change?

I travel with 5 spare batteries and 10 spare 1 gig cards for two bodies. Shoot RAW so c. 100 images per card.
Very rarely use screen.
Seems to be a good ratio!

I shot a wedding this weekend and filled a 2Gb card with 193 RAW images. Used the LCD to quick review about half the images. Battery still had about a quarter charge.

update:

1st test, just got a sandisk ultra II SD, freshly charged 1650 battery, initial format of card, shot on AE mode, iso 200, 3 sec. image review on, shutter speeds ranged in 1" to 1/125, filled the card at 203 raw shots, meter only showed near a quarter of the gauge full.

2nd test, same card, same battery, initial format of card, shot on AE mode, iso 200, no LCD view on, shutter speeds were all over the place, filled the card at 203 raw shots, meter only showed half full.

3rd test, same card, same battery, initial format of card, shot on AE mode, iso 200, no LCD mode, shutter speeds were around 1/30 - 1/250, battery dies at 58 raw shots.

464 raw shots. Not bad at all.

So the moral of the story is, stick to the fast cards, speedy writes keep the images copying faster. My theory about faster cards was correct, my transcend 1gb 80x card is a last resort option that can only get me about 50 raw shots or so.
