Another Reason to Use SLRs

Whoa! Along with "age" or without it, some of us have reasons to use automatic everything.😱

While there are so many reasons why I love SLRs, I now have two bags dedicated to Nikon SLRs. This week I have found another reason to work solely, for awhile, with my F6, F80 and D3100.

Arthritis. Big time swelling and pain in my right hand fingers, mostly my index finger. According to medical doctors, the flare-up is due to stress which enhances the existing issues with arthritis. Wow! I thought arthritis was for old people!😀 It seems that cortisol doesn't help.

So, I enjoy my manual cameras immensely. But setting shutter speeds is too much and I must take a break from manual cameras.

I still have a stable of Nikon and Leica SLR's. For close focus and accurate framing they are the best. Also I have the option of perspective control with an Olympus 24/3.5 Shift lens that has been converted to Nikon F-mount.

On my black SL2-MOT I have a chrome 65/3.5 Viso lens mounted. The Viso lenses are modeled after large format lenses and have large image circles. Some people utilize Viso lenses on 645 cameras.

Also for action shots the SLR is the better tool.

When Arthur Ritus comes to visit I go with my Fuji X100S! SLR's for me are great but just not the experience I'm looking for.

Cal, you are so right.

The F6 is the workhorse for me and it does everything and more for me. As a former sports photographer, I have always used Nikon D2 bodies. I suspect I will go back to that soon just for a small income stream.

For now, a long term documentary is a great match with the F6. My only limitation is lack of a few fast lenses. What I prefer is a 28-70 or 24-70 G lens but that must wait.

The addition of he F80 body in the same bag is a bonus. Either way, the pressure on my index finger is minimal and the old man's disease has been thwarted! 😀

Lyn bought me these gloves that basically are containers for uncooked rice. When placed in a microwave oven for 2-3 minutes they provide warm moist heat that is soothing.

You can often find these at health food stores, or you can even make your own out of a small fabric bag and some uncooked rice.

My wife uses Aspercreme on her hands for her osteoarthritis. Says it helps some.

Meloxicam? Yeah, an NSAID may be in the future. I have made it so far without any medications in my life so I am hoping for a lot longer before starting those. Sounds like a great solution to keep you riding!!!

Fish oil Dave. Lots of it. Stops my 50yo neck fusing vertebrae together. Start off with 10k mg a day and take it from there. I'm on 16 most days.

Dave, no need to use drugs I called a place in Ft Lauderdale call life Extension. Their doctors got me on a few supplements and my wrists are as good as new. Plus I have more energy in general. Oh, the advice is free, the supplements aren't.

A blood test found I was Vitamin D deficient.
I now take a supplement and my mysterious joint pains have gone away.

You don't have to be a night worker (like me) to be Vitamin D deficient.
Suggest you have your doctor check next time you have blood work done.

Yeah, it's amazing what a lack of vitamins will do to the body. And one thing that helps me with the arthritis is a bit of black cherry juice each day. I'll pour a glass 3/4 full with water, and the rest of the way with cherry juice, and it keeps the inflammation at bay.

Nightshades. Some affected by arthritis say eliminating them from diet helps to control inflammation.

Hi Dave, I cannot help with siggestions for your hands but I agree SLR canebe a good tool in many cases. So much I like to shoot my RFs if I only had to have one camera this would be my FM2, probably. But I am not so sure about this 🙂

Wow, great posts all around, I really appreciate them as I was under the impression I was alone with sore hands. I have seen flare-ups before when stress was unbearable yet it settled down after a little while. All those things mentioned above from exercise to diet really helped. Black cherry juice... hmmm where to find that... I must try it. Supplements too.

My FM2 sits for now with the M6 because my index finger is very sore. But I can easily use the Nikon F6 and F80. Maybe some photo therapy will work. Groan.

I need a vacation...🙁
