I'm on an astronomy kick at the moment, and though I don't plan to do much astrophotography, I have been reading up:

Scroll down that list and when you get to the 10 grand range things start to look very familiar, sensor wise. Turns out CCD is not so out of date, and the monochrome ones, just like the MM, except cooled, are really quite the tool for astrophotography.
And there is a pretty good user base which looks to rival the Leica wielding street photographers 🙂
