I was at antique store this weekend and noticed this sitting in a case. I could tell it needed work, the shutter speeds in the middle range seem all the same speed. The price I worked out was very good, especially when he pulled out the viewfinder, Elmar closup attachment, and the 135mm Tele Elmar that all went with it. I think it's a IIIc, 417K serial number

I'm going to send it to Xe to work on the shutter, it's my first Leica. But I can't figure out how to get the tele Elmar apart, there are some bad fingerprints inside. Here is my query: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1752752

If either lens is coated, leave cleaning to a professional. The Leica soft coatings are so soft that they are easily cleaned right off the glass, which is a major loss. The 135mm Elmar would be coated if serial number is 600000 or greater.

The reflection in the Elmar is a little blue, so that why coated comes to mind.

Hi John, the longer Elmar was not coated, it's a black early one. I got it apart and cleaned it carefully (I have a lot of lens experience). The little one is coated, and I just blew the dust off, it looks good, just a few wisps.

I've sent the camera off to Youxin, to see what he can do with it (shutter speeds are off or not working). I figure with as little as I have in the camera, a hundred bucks or so on a spruce up will still be OK. I've had a few early Canons and most work like a champ, but the one with pinholes I passed on. There are too many good ones. Hopefully this IIIc will be a good experience, my first Leica.

Excellent customer service from Youxin Ye. He CLA'd it and had it back to me in a week, then I discovered something else I needed done, and he let me send it back for free, and again had it back in a couple days! I got a GripTac cover from CameraLeather, and it's great. You may not be able to tell in the original picture, but the cover was gone, it was just black brass. Now it looks great, hardly a scratch.

OK, second roll after getting a CLA, then sending it back because of a film wind problem. Now about half the shots have a variable white, vertical band towards the right side. At first, I thought the brim of my ballcap could be dragging on the shutter speed dial. But after the second roll has the same thing, I'm beginning to wonder. Could it be finger/hat drag, or do I need to send it back yet again for repair? I want to like this camera, I really do, but film and repairs are making it hard.

Some bands are not this light, some are narrower, some shots are fine.

Not capping during winding, perhaps? You could shoot a test roll and put a lens cap on every time you wind for half the roll, then point the lens into the light during wind for the other half.
