I would prefer it to be around 1K but the price is what it is.
What factory options are out there for 35mm?
M2, M4, ...?
I'm also open to screw mounts.

Repaints yes. Originals, not unless it's a garage sale find.

I think you would have to pay at least $2500 for a black paint M2/M4 with either very bad cosmetics (which could be considered cool and acceptable) or serious service needs (say $500-$1000 more).

I saw a dealer take in a nice M4 p in black chrome a week ago-- pm me if interested, very little edge wear, paint on door had couple chips.

So M4-2's and M5's don't count?

So M4-2's and M5's don't count?
Only if it has both black paint and brass.

When I wanted a black paint M, I got ahold of non-working beaters and had them stripped, overhauled, and repainted. The cost for everything, including the beater camera, was under $1k
I have not seen an original black paint M for under $3k for some time now.

Like everyone else mentioned, your best bet is to get a chrome Leica and repaint it yourself, or have someone else repaint it for you.

If it has to be an original black paint Leica and under $1500, you are pretty much left with Standards, II-s and III-s from the 1930's. Fine as a collector's item but in terms of picture taking, any of the standard chrome/black chrome M bodies would be a more sensible idea.
With the current prices of original BP M3/2/4 bodies - if I could swing around that kind of money, I'd rather make myself an á la carte MP instead.

Keep your eyes on every Craigslist near you. I just scored a recently CLD'd black M4-P w/MR meter & 28mm Color-Skopar for $800.00. The deals are out there & this time of year people are needing money for the holidays, so just keep looking.

I want something green under 100$, a car, a pair of pants, a skateboard. As long as it's green, it's ok.

Awesome deal, but the M4-P is black chrome and not black paint. I believe the OP is looking for a BP camera.

It going to be tough to find an original black paint Leica m for under $2000
A repaint of a chrome camera would be in your price range .
There are many nice black paint screwmount in the under $1000
Any older camera will need serviced , so plan on the cost of it .

Yes, you can find them. But you'd have to be very, very lucky. And I was very lucky when I saw this in Fujiya last year. Just 118k yen at the time and even on today's exchange rate it is still just a tad under USD$1500.
That my friends in a BP M4. There is a scratch on the top plate that is about an inch long and a millimetre deep (if at all). Also, the 1 second mark is slow. I have shot slides with this thing and it seems fine.

I've never really understood the widespread desire for brassy, black painted cameras, particularly Leicas.
Why pay such a large premium for a camera with such a delicate, easily damaged finish ?
There again, I've never understood the obsession with the myriad intricacies and innumerable variations of ''bokeh'', either.
Perhaps I'm not a proper photographer, even though I've been using chrome Leicas and Nikons for nearly 50 years... (!)
