I've always been partial to Provia 400X, but it's a slide film, and possibly the most expensive film on the market today...

Here is my Tweaked Portra 400.. Trying to look Like Ektar
Here is my Tweaked Portra 400.. Trying to look Like Ektar
Here are some shots from the weekend tweaked by varying contrast, saturation and vibrancy.. Some success, but I had better not include skin tones...

I should add that my obsession with making Portra 400 look like Ektar is in anticipation of handheld shooting of the Carnival parade in S.F. with a Zeiss 100-300mm lens. I need the speed, but I want the colors.

I like the superia 400, very versatile, and cheap

Where do you buy your Porta400?
Both B&H and Adorama stock Porta 400 a long with most other brands and types of film

Well, maybe not so easy to scan as Portra 400, but the Fuji Provia 400X is an excellent film. I use this film a lot in 6x6. The grain is very small, But I have yet to make (or see) some comparison to Portra 400. Last time I used ISO 400 negative films in 35mm (not the new Portra though) I found them quite grainy - but I shoot 35mm rather little, so maybe I am just spoiled.

I shot a roll of drugstore Kodak 400 and the end results were nice.

The new Portra is close enough to Portra NC for me to be happy with it.

Shoot the 400 at box speed, drop the shadows slightly in Curves, and push the Saturation slightly. That should do it!I should add that my obsession with making Portra 400 look like Ektar is in anticipation of handheld shooting of the Carnival parade in S.F. with a Zeiss 100-300mm lens. I bought 2 pro packs of 400H and after 3-4 rolls, all I can say is "Meh".

I think Portra NC has some of the best skin tones of any film. Excellent.

Yes, Fuji Provia 400X is an excellent film:
- wonderful natural and vivid colors
- ecellent skin tones
- very fine grain
- ecellent sharpness (much better than Portra 400)
- excellent resolution (again better than the new Portra, which is quite weak in this respect)
- very flexible, excellent results when pushed to 800, and even very good results @ 1600
That's why it is my most used ISO 400 color film.

I have 400H in the freezer, but have yet to use it. What is the difference between 'H' and 'X'. I assume that both are more contrasty and more vivid colors than Portra 400. I would think that the 'X' has less latitude than either negative films and perhaps greater sharpness.

I've been on Flickr looking at "Fujichrome 400X Coolscan" and have been really impressed with all aspects of this film. Wow, maybe there is a more vivid EI400 color film with nice sharpness and grain for the speed. The price seems to be the only real negative.. and the more limited dynamic range of positive material, but that is sometimes a plus when shooting slides. Thanks...
Ordered some.. ouch!

400H has a very different quality than the new Portra 400. I'll have to post some examples later, but the 400H seems to have a greenish tint.
