I just got my hands on a nikon S3. I love useing this camera but I'm finding out that sometimes the slow speed gears don't catch or activate. I think they just need a thorough CLA. I heard these nikons are difficult to work on so I'm not sure who to send it too. Preferably someone in the west coast.

Check out the Cameraquest site. Can't get any farther west in the continental US.

Try the guy who runs this list, Stephen Gandy (Cameraquest). Not sure if he's currently accepting cameras, but his repair guy did a top-notch job on my Nikon M.

as far as SLRs are concerned, I have a Nikon FA as well as a canon EOS rebel. despite that these are technically better cameras than may rangefinder, I still prefer to use a rangefinder. I like the compact size and the fact that it's all mechanical and the way it handles. do you believe I will be wasting my money by getting this one serviced?

You heard stupid things. Those old Nikons are very easy to work on, just because they were very cleverly designed and very well made. They are ball bearings built, so quite undestructible and extremely reliable even if not used frequently. A slow speeds escapement which doesn't catch or run is a very basic problem indeed.I heard these nikons are difficult to work on (...)

Bellamy Hunt (Japan Camera Hunter) can arrange for service from a technician in Japan at a reasonable cost. You can reach him through his website.

CameraQuest has done a couple of good rangefinder CLAs for me.
