Any investors for Kodachrome yet?

Been out of touch for awhile and since December is coming up soon, I was wondering if there has been any action on investors/enthusiasts to pick up the Kodachrome production and/or processing?

Maybe you could call the impossible project... but I don't think Kodak will approve of it!

Too complex to make or process for small scale. And as massive a failure at reverse engineering SX-70 film as "Impossible Project" did with Polaroid, I'd really hate to see what resulted with Kodachrome!

Ah, yes, but somehow I have a gut feeling that somehow, someone will approach Kodak and buy it from them. There is a lot of "infrastructure", if you will that needs to be saved for the future and hopefully for new production or processing. There are also a lot of wealthy people who just might be interested, not for profit, but for other reasons.

Nothing disappears forever anymore as sooner or later, there is a revival and I hope it happens in my lifetime.

'Massive failure'? They actually managed to make and sell film you know. They are still in business and it seems they are improving. Not anywhere near yet what I would call acceptable but it's a nice story. Who knows?

I have to admit though I bought a 195 bcause I can put Fuji film in it...

Not enough money in it. The process is a bitch & the chemistry involved is even worse. Kodachrome is dead.

Deal with it.

Dear Dave,

Why would anyone try to revive it? If the market were big enough, Kodak could go on making it, without any significant additional investment. Anyone who wanted to revive it would have to get all their earnings from a small (and shrinking) market and recover their setup costs.

Cheers,

R.

Great quote from a cynic at photokina: "Their film is much better now. It works, which it didn't before."

Cheers,

Oh, I agree about the cost and lack of ROI...but stranger things have happened in niche markets before. Just wondering, that's all. I do not expect anyone but an eccentric(s) with a lot of money wanting to play around with it that would entertain the idea... but it would be interesting!

I wouldn't even put $2 of my hard-earned money into such a venture, and can't imagine too many other people who would. How much of your own money would you invest? Would you be willing to buy any Neo-Kodachrome if it cost, say, $15 per 24 frame roll?

I'm with Bill... Kodachrome is dead (and that is a real shame)... but deal with it (meaning, time to move on and work with currently available and affordable films to achieve nice images without looking back.)

Geez, been awhile since I have posted and now there is so much anger directed toward innocent questions, what the hell is going on with this forum?

BTW, I was an avid Polaroid user and wish it was still available, but the "Impossible" replacement doesn't seem to live up to the original, doesn't particularly intrique me, and costs too much. Maybe I'll end up eating these words in the future... who knows?

I don't read it as anger, Dave... just that some folks don't particualry agree with your unbridled optomism.

Optimism? Hardly. Just a question.... beats talking about the same droll topics IMO...but why is everyone so down on everybody, Leica included and defensive about whoever's opinions?

I haven't been around for awhile but this forum has definitely changed in temperament.:(

I thought Steve McCurry said that one of Kodak's modern films emulated kodachrome very closely (E100 I think).

If there's something that's currently a near-duplicate of kodachrome, I doubt there would be any financial reason for a resurrection.

Yes, there is something on the market now that seems to be very good and Kodak is to be commended for placing the new film on the market. With the recent resurgence in film, as discovered by Kodak, we can only hope that it will be a success!

I need to finish up my last three rolls of Kodachrome and then I will try the new one...if I can remember to look it up but I think it is on a recent thread here on RFF...

... somewhere I must still have a copy of that eBay item where a small scale lab in the US was selling their Kodachrome processing unit. From memory, starting bid was around $5000 and they explicitly that the unit is only for self-collectors and a truck is required .... Support in getting this thing to work was promised ...
