Any news on the new Plustek 120 scanner?

Why would you buy a scanner without a driver?

It's pretty, but not $2k pretty, imho.

Drivers are easy - download the demo version of silverfast and it installs the driver. Same as my 8100.

I think it's also been made quite clear that you cannot buy it without Silverfast so bury your hopes. As far as I understand it Silverfast will be the only software included so it would be silly to expect them to sell it without SF. I don't know of any company for consumer electronics that would sell their hardware without a software to run it. I think it's safe to assume, though, that you're not paying retail for SF when it's bundled.

European prices are always higher than the US. I bet it's about 2k in the US ;). I bought my 8100 at a big discount with the limited version of silverfast rather than the ai full version. No reason plustek won't do the same with the 120. Not saying they definitely will, but just hoping.
Mark from Plustek has already said the guy from VUESCAN will get a scanner as soon as they are available.

TBH I don't even really care if it does end up being 1999 euro equiv in the US - thats still only $2400 which is only 400 more, and about half the price of a coolscan equivalent second hand. Its the only option for me for a multi format scanner. Don't want to deal with ****ty epson flatbeds again.
 
€1999 is a good price if the claimed specs are true. It's prolly to much of a stretch for me tho. I'm not complaining but I've my fingers crossed that thing comes closer to the reflecta price-wise

In this world things do not work like that...

You think that Silverfast would develop a driver for Plustek for a premium scanner that will sell in a VERY limited number and let Plustek offer an option without Silverfast software so the users (and Plustek) can free ride on their driver?

We are talking about Silverfast here, aren't we?!

And, Ed can have a stack of Plustek 120 scanners. He will not make a driver for it.

Yes. That is exactly what I did with my 8100.
 
When I stepped in with this thread I think it was on page 13. It's ten pages lengthier than that now. Mark from Plustek has posted in this thread several times to respond to the '-Silverfast / +VueScan' requests and every time his replay has been 'it's not going to happen'.

With only several weeks to go to the Photokina, it seems time to lay it off now, it's going to be Silverfast bundled whether y'all like it or not.

To clarify, we were actually talking about it being cheaper by being bundled with the lesser version of silverfast so we don't have to pay the exorbitant amount for their 'ai studio' version.
 
I would like to know if its a 3 line sensor or not. I suspect it is, probably same sensor as was in the nikon 9000s. But who knows, their spec sheet is little bit lacking and using theoretical numbers which are never obtainable in reality. Bit like the theoretical MTF charts some lens manufacturers put out unlike zeiss who use MTF charts produced from production run lenses.

As buzzardkid already said, it's just not gonna happen. Some people are wishing for it to be bundled with Vuescan (totally unrealistic) and you're asking for it to be bundled with SF SE which I sort of understand but it's been made pretty clear that it's going to be bundled with Ai. I'm assume the deal with Lasersoft has been long signed and there's nothing to be changed anymore.
Also, Lasersoft usually doesn't make the SE version available for high end scanners. I can't get any version of Silverfast SE for my Nikon 9000. Besides, I really don't think you're paying anywhere near retail price for SF when it's bundled. And even if they did decide to bundle SE instead of Ai, who says they wouldn't just sell the scanner for the same price? Companies usually don't try to sell their product for the lowest price possible. They set the price at what they think people will pay.
 
All I know is I can't wait to see examples. I figure I'll want one, although I'll have to sell a bunch of my film kit in order to buy this thing. Maybe that's a good thing.
 
So that will make in about €2400 I guess. Now let's see how long it will take until first reviewers will get their units offered from Plustek for a thorough review. Until Christmas it should be clear what is this scanner really capable off. Hopefully.

IQ, speed, robustness of hardware and software, repeatability of results and stability of the operation. If it is all there than I may seriously consider one.

But I would assume with VAT (20%). So a more realistic US price would be $2630. The only time I've ordered from the UK I said I wasn't a UK resident and had it shipped to Canada, they pulled the VAT off.

unfortunately I'm in the EU and that won't fly for me :bang: Might help other people though!


Had my first paid photography assignment today, although there was considerable luck involved. Guess I'm gonna need a lot more of those before I can get me that scanner.
