I have some firsts and I am a little worried about lasts: first post, first rangefinder, and maybe the last RD1 from B&H.
I considered the RD1 for a long time, made the decision to buy and then found B&H showed it "out of stock" then last month just checking I found it "in stock" and made the plunge.
I really like the "manualness" of it including cocking the shutter, it just feels good!
I have been out with it and taking a lot of photos, I'm finding it takes some getting used to get the focus real sharp. I've done the newspaper test for focus that was posted here and I can get it into sharp focus.
I have noticed the double shutter problem, and read all the posts about the firmware upgrade and comments of how easy it was and how good the improvements are, so I want to do the firmware update.
I have the download on my desktop ready to go. i have read the PDF instructions and find it troubling to read all the dire warnings about needing to send it to Epson if it screws up.
Is there anything special I should know about doing it from those of you who were successful upgrading?

Richard Weathered

If I can do it, anyone can. Sometimes I think I'm Mr. Dark Cloud over my Head. I was at least as neurotic as you about it, put it off and then cleared some time. Doesn't take much time. Used fully charged battery, and formatted, otherwise blank card (although the instructions suggest the latter may not be necessary if there is sufficient room -- but why take chances.) Followed the instructions exactly as they are, and had no problem and no regrets.

Those warnings are just their to protect Epson if anything just happens to go wrong with a self-done upgrade. They don't mean that anything will go wrong. Just do it!

Thanks for replying and the encouragement, I have just completed the firmware upgrade and as stated it was easy, "a piece of cake", not even devils food.
