The kids and I are gonna take a walk down to the corner pub for lunch. Next door there is a great old "Sunday only" flea market, where a wonderful old gentleman has a vast collection of LIFE mags, all carefully sealed, catalogued and indexed according to date or cover story or other big topic of interest. I thought I might treat myself to an issue or two (they are selling for between $15-$30 I think). Any good ones to seek out, related to stuff we like
, focus on Magnum photogs, HCB, Capa, other rangefinder photogs, topics etc.?

Oh yeah, anything shot by W. Eugene Smith. Look for the "Country Doctor" issue. If you find it youre a lucky man!

As a young lad, I really enjoyed the issue featuring Elke Summer.
Somehow, I don't think that's what you were thinking about... at least for the kids.

There's a book, "Great Photographic Essays From Life", published in 1978. It's more than worth looking for because it reproduces all of the great essays in the original size and layout, with commentary by Maitland Edey. ISBN 0-8212-0742-3. I like "The Private Life of Gwyned Filling" from 3May1948, photos by Leonard McCombe. There's also "Spanish Village" by Gene Smith (9April1951) and "The Lash of Success" by Grey Villet (16November1962.

Well, I came home with the Nov 22 1948 Harry Truman cover story (Gene Smith). I was faced with too many choices, and the man's index did not list the Country Doctor story. Pesphoto, you know who's on the cover of that one? I like this issue, though...lots to look at, and it has a great old smell, though Truman is no Elke Summer
Thanks for the info about that book Victor, I will look out for that.

Leonard Freed, a Magnum photographer, passed away in December. He had some great B & W spreads in Life. mike
