Just wondering if some folks around here experimenting with a beta or production version of FilmLab for Android/iPhone? Comments?

I test the beta. It seems to be working well, but it's not my standard capture workflow.

Hi G
Other than testing and playing at tech....do you find it to be useful for anything? seems like a way to get snapshots on the internet fairly quickly and browsing rolls of film without paying the scanning fees from commercial labs.

I have the production version, I bought it in 2018. It is now on v 1.5.0.

er.. how do I know if I have the latest version? Does it update automatically? There is no way of telling in the app itself.

As for quality? I wouldn't recommend it unless all you want to do is view an inverted image to see if you have anything there. Image quality is disappointing and you have to do a lot of awkward cropping to view it properly (if you save it).

I am an original backer . However, I decided to wait until a mature version for Android was made. Of course it has been a couple of years and Ios version a priority. I recently received an email from Abe saying that on verge of a production version of FilmLab to be introduced in a couple of weeks. I don't know whether there updates to what you purchased but I presume it would show in the App Store? I also participated in Pixl atr from Hamish Gill and he recently responded that the film holders ready to ship and gave me a delivery schedule.

Abes demos on website seem to show a pretty decent workflow, at least in his hands.

The App Store shows my purchase, and the version # updates that have since been introduced to the App. But I cannot confirm the version # of my purchased App.
Which is why I'm wondering if it updates automatically because I bought it.

I've used it when I wanted to quickly convert a negative to a positive for casual distribution, and to look through a roll of negatives as positives for fast evaluation. It does a good job.

Huss, if you go to the App Store and look for the app, and there are no updates, then whatever version the App Store is telling you is available is the version installed on your phone. Simple as that. Some apps present version info in their options or configuration. And version information is also available in the Settings > General > iPhone Storage listing for all released apps installed.

If you're using the beta version and the TestFlight downloader, the downloader tells you the explicit version you have installed and you can back up to a previous version if some new bug gets in the way of what you're trying to test. There are currently three builds available from TestFlight (1.4.0 in two builds, 1.4.1 in one build, and 1.5.0 in one build).

I could try and email Abe but he is not always that responsive and lives in the belly of the COVID beast.

I signed up as an early supporter. Has good interface and only moderate quality of conversion of color negatives. For 35mm, better with a good macro lens (Moment or ExoLens by Zeiss). I don't use it much at all.

Another alternative for excellent color:
- Use the Lightroom Mobile app on your phone to capture a color negative
- Let it sync to your laptop
- Then convert the negative using Negative Lab Pro (NLP)

Advantage: ~16bit capture (vs. 8) and the color analysis engine of NLP.

To quick check a roll of negatives, viewing as positive, on iPhone:

- Settings... General... Accessability... Disiplay Accomodations... Invert Colors... Classic
- Camera

Point at negative, see the inverted (positive) image, and it's pretty good.
