Anybody know what causes this gross stuff in scans? :(

Every once in a while when scanning negatives or slides I get patches of blemishes (see attached) which look almost like irregular moon craters. This is not obvious on the negative by the naked eye.

The image I'm attaching is an extreme size at full res.

Anybody know what this is? Thanks. 🙂
 
Yes, I get them from time to time in retail-processed C41 negs. I believe it is damage caused by chemical splashes. I note that I never see these in my home-processed B&W film. That's just a guess, however I note that I most often see these ickies on the end of a roll - so I'm guessing they got splashed or drug into some chemical they didn't like at the end of the dev cycle. I seldom see these in the middle of a roll.

I'm sure it's on the film, and caused by sloppy processing, as per previous post. Take a look at it through a loupe. Should be able to see it then.

YES! This was the very last frame on the roll! None of this at all on the next to the last.

In fact I was a bit miffed because they trimmed off maybe 5% or so of that last frame, not that there was anything really meaningful. I assume they have some kind of auto blade that pulls out the film as much as possible and then snips.

If it's a chemical or fluid splash, maybe the H2O on the cotton ball trick might help. I'll try that tonite. 🙂 Thanks.
 
Yeah it happens to my color negs too, for B&W they just stick the prints together, so that u'd find white patches of emptiness all over the photo :arg:

Edit: it doesn't look like scratches to me, the scratches has different color, yeah in addition to the scratches!
