I have been tryin to buy an aspherical Summicron 35mm on the bay. A seller (hilltime) has offered me a lens for my bid of 1001.00 in a second chance deal. I have stayed away from these deals before, but I am considering this one. We would do the transaction through Western Union, which should make it secure.
Has anyone ever done one of these before, or done business with this seller?

this is part of a "keep it safe" email from Ebay the other day....

Below are important safety tips that can help keep your accounts and personal information more secure and help guard against fraud, including spoof (also called phishing) emails and websites, and fake second chance offers.

* Never pay with Western Union or Money Gram. eBay strongly encourages its members to avoid using instant cash wire transfer services such as Western Union or MoneyGram. It's against eBay's Safe Payments Policy for a seller to request payment via these methods as they've proven to be unsafe when paying someone the buyer doesn't know.

* Check My Messages to verify the authenticity of eBay emails. Any email eBay sends you about your account or requesting personal information will also be in My Messages. Before responding to an eBay email asking for information about your account or requesting personal information, verify it's authentic by checking My Messages. If it's not in My Messages, it's a fake email. If you receive a suspicious email that looks like it's from eBay or PayPal, please forward it to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com. We will respond (usually within minutes) to tell you whether or not the email is authentic.

Email the buyer through the "ask seller a question link" and see if he is offering. Otherwise it is probably a scam.

If it really is the seller asking don't go outside of ebay for the transaction use paypal.
Western Union is in no way secure..

Regarding Western Union, eBay has a two fold strategy: 1) To help people avoid scams, 2) To funnel everyone to PayPal which they own and is a big money maker for them. eBay actually exploits security venerabilities which their own policies have helped create. They exploit them to drive everyone to PayPal which they falsely advertise as offering all sorts of buyer/seller protections. PayPal is a mixed bag, there are some protections, but they are not as good as advertised, and they sometimes come at a cost (fees that is, which are substantial and not publisised by PayPal).

I will occasionally allow a buyer on eBay to pay me with a direct cash transfer via Western Union to me (not my bank). This is sometimes necessary if they are in a country that does not support PayPal.

Just a few days ago paypal agreed with federal regulators to make changes that will both protect users and allow users to better manage their accounts.

Yes, we may not like it, but on eXXX the only way to trade safely is via PayPud. The latter does offer optional payment methods (you have to look for thehvery tiny print) so that you can use a credit card.

If you "stick" with it, you will get a true sale.

BTW", "eWhatever" uses a "Second Offer" tool - the "Square Trade" is a dispute resolution service so any "offer" using that name is BOGUS.

Oh, and the wisest thing to do is never answer any query from them that is not posted to you in your MY EBoY account! Forget all of those e-mail "notices". If you properly sign in to your "MY ...." account you will get all of your messages there under a secured system.

No, I don't work for any of them....
