How do you determine exposure? Same as if the lens was attached? I ask because on my D750 the AE auto exposure...

The D750 can measure exposure with lenses that contain no CPU with the aperture pick up tab around the lens mount. If you set custom function f5 to use that, the camera will measure exposure based on that. As a freelensed lens neither moves the tab, and also doesn't respond to the aperture lever, the measured value is the correct exposure.

There's a caveat of course, as it doesn't exactly meter through the lens, but measures the entire field of view, including the back side of the lens and light slipping around it. That may also explain the wildly varying exposure..

Yes I've tried it with several lenses I don't have the adapters for. I use an old Nikon D90 which I've retired from front line service so I'm not too precious about having to clean sensor dust.

I just remembered I wanted to try this with a Meopta enlarging lens I have lying around.

Interesting technique. I must admit I never heard of it.

Possibly stupid question here, maybe a misunderstanding. If you take off the lens and hold it, I would think that you could only use it for very close subjects. Is that the point, or am I missing something?

It depends on how far the subjects are. I was able to easily attain focus with the Pentax 50mm on the 5D Mark II for subjects between 1 and 15 feet away at least. I didn't try it with more distant subjects as I was shooting a mood piece centered around a person.
