I'm heading out to Anchorage in March. Is there an outlet to hire xc ski equipment? What ISO fim would you recommend? I've bought a load of Portra 800. During the day should I have 160 available?

I am not from Anchorage, but I lived there for awhile.

I don't know anything about the XC ski equipment scene. I assume there is a place that rents it. Anchorage is a big city with Nordstrom, an Apple store, Taco Bell, etc. What I am saying is that you can find most anything you want.

As far as film goes, during the winter the sun moves through the sky like a boom-a-rang. It doesn't go up and over your head, but slides sideways across the sky. That means there is a lot of sideways light while the sun is up, which in March is likely similar to what you are experiencing now where ever you are, a 10 1/2 hour day. In the middle of winter days are very very short, but in March the days are speedily changing over to summer mode where days are very long.

I remember plenty of sunny days where the sideways sun would reflect off the ice directly into my eyes all day. I wouldn't hesitate to bring 160. Even with cloudcover there will be light to shoot 160.

You will be struck with the beauty of the place. If I were travelling there in March myself, I wouldn't think twice about bringing some 50 Velvia as well. Heading there in early January would be different, as you could only use your camera a couple of hours a day! With each day they are gaining something like 10 minutes of daylight, so by March it will be good.

Make sure you head up the hill in south anchorage and look out over the inlet. On a clear day you can see Denali jutting into the sky, 170(?) miles away.

I would also make a day trip of driving south towards Girdwood (perhaps you will already be skiing at Alyaska). The drive down the Seward highway is breathtaking and very photogenic.

Talking about it makes me miss it. Can I come with?

Thanks for the info Clancycoop. I'm expecting ski rental will be straight forward but I was struggling to imagine what the lighting will be like. We'll actually be there towards the end of March so I'll definitely take some 160. Of course you can come!
