Hi! I'm trying to locate a certain river in Latvia. According to the information I have the river runs to the Bay of Riga. Unfortunately maps, Wikipedia or Google don't offer any help. It might be that the name I have (Latche) is old and could also be german language. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Hi
I'm originally from Latvia, and i do not remind any river named Latche
You have Daugava, Lielupe, and Gauja as 3 biggest rivers there. There are many little rivers, but Latche is not in Latvian
Do you have any additional info? Where did you take the name from?

Hi, I am. But I have no idea of river name of which is spoken similar to Latche. Maybe similar to [Li:chupe]? Can you supply more details, like where it originates or some spots on banks? If you are looking for specific facilities near river, it also may help.

Thanks guys, I sort of knew this would be a tough nut. I'm interested about this only for some odd and forgotten historical reasons. I got the name of the river Latche from a book written by someone who was commissioned in Riga area in 1918. He is using old german names like river Aa and Tuckum. The Latche river (presumably a very small river) should be on the southern side of the gulf of Riga. Could it be Lapmezciema?

IgalSc, I think I got it now. The Latche name in my book is presumably an old and forgotten german naming. The place is now called Klapkalnciems. West along the coast from Jurmala. Beautiful area, I should visit there again. I was there with my bicycle a couple of years ago. The photo is from Salacgriva and the lady is my wife.

If river was small, then it could even disappear since that times. However, you could check if author has mentioned Lāčupe [La:chupe] where upe is river so beginning of name is quite similar to Laach.
Some pictures of river here are marked as Lāčupe, and it's near Riga, this days it is on outskirts of city, back then it were out of city, maybe hour or couple of hors by a horse. If you look on the map, see there's small district called LĀČUPE obviously called after river which nowadays isn't flowing to sea but is rather extinct under influence of humans.
Hope this helps
Uh, and here see another Lačupīte near Klapkalnciems (name is pretty generic here). Scroll map little south-west and there is Tukums.
Lāčupe is Latvian, not German, it originates from lācis, that is, bear.

Thanks a lot btgc! It must be that small river near Klapkalnciems. I'm planning to visit the place next summer. I have fond memories of strong, tasty, non filtered beer from my earlier visit in Jurmala, Talsi and Ventspils
It's amazing how helpful and knowledgeable people are on this forum. Thanks again.

Have a nice trip, Mablo! If you'll need some more assistance, drop me a PM.
Happily, we still have some nice beers, not only drinks with a taste similar to beer

I must confess lately I'm not a big beer drinker, but I'm pretty sure Porteris should be available. Some local breweries also are doing well, some people still prefer specialty beers over transnational all-around brands.

My favourite Latvian beer is this one:
http://www.valmiermuiza.lv/lv/aktuali
It's reddish brown, unfiltered and the aroma is out of this world. A fabulous beer!
